Well, the combo of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Unreal Engine is a real knee-slapper if crashes make you laugh. UE5 has also has lost its ability to understand how to minimize the screen - it minimizes, then pops it right back up. Helpful, guys.

Not sure what to blame here: UE 5.8.3, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, or some configuration setting that didn't matter before.

People with fresh installs knew this months ago. Ubuntu got rid of the graphical Additional Drivers tool. Nvidia is installed at the command line using the nvidia-drivers tool. I don't mind. The 90's were cool.

Mysql server now has its very own LTS version. 8.4 LTS is included in Ubuntu 26.04. Oh. It no longer uses the mysql_native_password plugin, and those using it will all be locked out. Ha ha. The fix is:

ALTER USER 'user'@'host' IDENTIFIED WITH caching_sha2_password BY 'password';

You can force it on for a while with a config file change. I suggest just doing the ALTER USER command above, instead. Otherwise, you'll be back here again when version 9 drops.

They've also deprecated 32-bit mysql. Boo. Everyone is so mean to 32-bit machines.

OH, HELLO! PostgreSQL was updated to a version with 3X performance when reading from storage. Mastodon might benefit from this.

There are a lot of VM improvements with a new hardware virtualization method, HWE, which is much appreciated, thanks.

There are many WSL changes for you heathens.

Verbally expressing the following would most certainly have gotten you burned at the stake for witchcraft in ye olden times, provided you said it demonically, and made fists while howling the last word at the sky, just for emphasis:

"Developers can now quickly build Ubuntu ROCK images for their Java applications using the Gradle and Maven plugins for Rockcraft."

Steam upgraded itself. If you have it installed, and the upgrade script asks you if you want to stop to correct an incompatible 32-bit steam driver, just say no and let it continue. Starting steam took care of it.

Also, the upgrade resets your screen settings to the default. To use the default with this screen, I'd need a bigger screen. I changed it back in Settings.

There are many changes to Ubuntu in 26.04 LTS. Some should make for better performance and profiling (not you, the hardware). There is an upgrade which should improve performance in Windows games. A long list of changes I'm not going to include in this post, lol.

As I use it, I'll give my impressions.

X is out, but there is a compatibility app, so KDE will still work, for example. It's fully Wayland.

system-timesyncd is out. Good ol' chrony is in.

You can search the web from a gnome shell with, I think, the search engine indicated in your default browser.

There are claims of accessibility improvements. Some of you will have much to say about them, I'm sure.

I haven't decided what to do about the server yet. It's an identical upgrade, except for docker, Mastodon, PeerTube, Faircamp, and jitsi-meet.

You can now upgrade Ubuntu from 24.04 LTS to 26.04.1 LTS

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute Raccoon was released back in April 2026 when it provided you with many new features, such as GNOME 50 that provided improved performance and better fractional scaling, systemd 259, and APT 3 that provided enhanced appearance and improved package dependency resolution, thus fixing a decades-old interface bug while providing a more comfortable appearance.

Starting from today, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS users can finally upgrade to the newer Ubuntu long-term support release, which is Ubuntu 26.04.1 Resolute Raccoon, to take advantage of new features and enhancements. This opens the path for users who prefer upgrading from an older LTS release to a more recent LTS release instead of interim releases.

Users will start receiving update notifications through Update Manager, with the rollout happening progressively throughout coming days, so you may or may not see the update notification yet. However, we advise that you perform a system backup, including your files, and read the changelogs that you can see here before upgrading, in case something goes wrong.

Additionally, you can perform an upgrade from the command line with:

 $ sudo do-release-upgrade

People will probably be like, "Dude, you're not a real Linux user because you chose Ubuntu, not Arch." But honestly, I just like the apt package manager, and a minimal server install comes with virtually nothing anyway. I've used Arch in the past, but with how bad the AUR has become as of late, I'm not sure I want to use Arch again.

And because everything I run is in Docker, I can still have up-to-date software.

Also not using Fedora because I'm not a fan of DNF.

Ubuntu 26.04.1 is here!

Ubuntu 26.04.1 is finally ready and is now available to the public, as September will find its way to us to introduce itself with a lot of excitement. The first point release brings a lot of improvements compared to the original version which was out back in April. And the most exciting thing is:

If you’re running 24.04.x, starting from today, you can finally upgrade to 26.04.1 by normal means!

As point releases are usually made for LTS releases with upgrades from the previous LTS release being enabled after every first point release, such as upgrading from 22.04.x to 24.04.1 and from 24.04.x to 26.04.1, this release is going to be a lot more exciting.

To upgrade your system by normal means from 24.04 LTS, you can either run the Update Manager or run the terminal and issue the sudo do-release-upgrade command. This way, you should be able to get a banner that tells you that the Ubuntu 26.04.1 version is now available. However, the download may be huge in the order of gigabytes, depending on how many applications are installed.

Check this link out to download Ubuntu 26.04.1!

The download may take several minutes, depending on your internet connection speed and how many applications are there on your system, while the installation may take as few as 15 minutes, depending on your applications and your computer performance. Never interrupt the upgrade process, or else you may have to either recover your system or backup your data and re-install the Ubuntu distribution using the 26.04.1 ISO image.

In the case of laptops, you’ll need to charge your laptop fully before upgrading, but it’s recommended to keep your laptop plugged in while upgrading to ensure that there are no interruptions. For PC towers, it’s recommended to keep it plugged in to the stable power source to avoid interruptions. Consult your electricity company for possible blackout schedules to plan your upgrade.

I had a weird bug in the Display manager in Ubuntu 26.04 (Gnome with Wayland). I couldn't save changes to my monitor settings -- resolution, arrangement, etc.

audacityはpipewireに直接対応していないのであれこれ試してみたが、結局easyeffectを噛ませて接続するのが、ウチの環境ではいちばん安定しているようだ。

Utilizatorii versiunii interimare Ubuntu 25.10 (Plucky Puffin) au ajuns la un punct de cotitură important. Conform calendarului oficial de lansări al Canonical, suportul tehnic pentru această versiune a expirat oficial, ceea ce înseamnă că sistemul nu va mai primi actualizări de securitate, remedieri de bug-uri sau patch-uri critice.

Deoarece rularea unui sistem de operare fără suport reprezintă un risc major de securitate, utilizatorii sunt îndemnați ferm să facă upgrade-ul la cea mai recentă și stabilă versiune cu suport pe termen lung: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.

Iată de ce este crucial acest upgrade și care sunt pașii de urmat:

Installing .NET 10.0 on Ubuntu proot-distro with Termux on Android

.NET 10.0 is a new version of the modern .NET framework that brings several improvements across different areas of the software development kit, including runtime improvements (JIT inlining improvements, method devirtualization, and so on), new APIs in .NET libraries (new JSON deserialization options, post-quantum cryptography support, and so on), and many more improvements.

Normally, any .NET applications that are built for a specific platform can be run normally, such as Android applications made with MAUI. However, what if you’ve planned to run a CLI .NET application on Android? Or an application for computers? Termux can provide you with a solution.

Recent improvements to Termux involved changing how proot-distro downloads the distribution containers so that it utilizes Docker Hub to download the necessary assets and configure them to be usable. Follow the below steps to install .NET 10.0 with Ubuntu proot-distro.

1. Install Termux from F-Droid.
   • For Samsung devices, you might want to turn off the Auto Blocker feature so that you can install it. You can also use the Play Store version, but we haven’t tested it yet, and your mileage may vary.
2. Open Termux, and let it configure itself. After that, upgrade all packages using pkg upgrade.
   • If you’re prompted to choose whether to keep your own changes or to install the package-supplied version, just press ENTER on your phone’s keyboard.
3. Once all necessary upgrades are complete, you can now install the proot-distro program using pkg install proot-distro.
4. Afterwards, install the Ubuntu 26.04 Docker container with proot-distro install ubuntu:26.04.
   • It might take a while, depending on your internet connection.
5. Now, you can login to the container with proot-distro login ubuntu.
6. Before installing any packages in the Ubuntu proot environment, you’ll have to check to see if there are any package updates with apt update.
   • If there are any, run apt dist-upgrade to upgrade all packages.
7. Install .NET SDK 10.0 or .NET Runtime 10.0, depending on your use case.
   • If you want to build .NET applications, install the SDK using apt install dotnet-sdk-10.0.
   • If you want to just run .NET applications, install the runtime using apt install dotnet-runtime-10.0.
8. If you’ve installed the SDK, verify that the application actually builds.
   • Create a new directory, such as test (mkdir test), and change the current directory to it (cd test)
   • Create a new .NET console project with dotnet new console --use-program-main.
   • Verify that it actually builds using dotnet run.

However, as of now, you may be running into an issue where the building stage of any application may fail with error messages that are similar to this:

 GC heap initialization failed with error 0x8007000E  Failed to create CoreCLR, HRESULT: 0x8007000E 

In this case, you’ll have to add an environment variable that changes the GC heap hard limit value to an acceptable value so that you can build and run applications on Android devices. In order to do this temporarily, append the environment variable before the command, such as this:

 $ DOTNET_GCHeapHardLimit=1C0000000 dotnet build 

If this works, you can add a line that exports this environment variable to your ~/.profile like this:

 $ echo "DOTNET_GCHeapHardLimit=1C0000000" >> ~/.profile  $ . ~/.profile 

Once done, exit and re-enter your proot environment, and you should be able to build and run .NET applications.

Wenn bei euch Windows-Spiele mit Steam/Proton unter Linux nie ein Problem waren, sie nach dem Upgrade auf Ubuntu 26.04 aber nicht mehr starten wollen, kann es evtl. an der neuen Ubuntu-Version oder auch irgendwie am Linux Kernel 7.0 liegen.

Die KI hat mir mehrere mögliche Ursachen und Lösungsmöglichkeiten vorgeschlagen, die alle nichts gebracht haben, bis auf diese hier: Steam als Flatpak-Paket zu installieren. Und tatsächlich, Proton-Spiele starten bei mir jetzt wieder.

Das nur als Hinweis, falls ihr über ähnliche Probleme stolpert.

Das Upgrade von Ubuntu 25.10 auf 26.04 hat kurzerhand PHP 8.4 deinstalliert... Gut, das liess sich relativ einfach wieder installieren (PHP 8.5). Dann noch ein paar Anpassungen.

Hätte er nicht einfach das alte PHP 8.4 auf dem System lassen können? Oder die 8.5 parallel installieren?

Die Privacy Extensions für IPv6 sind eigentlich eine tolle Idee.

Durch sie bekommen ausgehende Verbindungen eine nur kurzzeitig gûltige IPv6-Adresse.

Allerdings kann das bei Verwendung eines DynDNS-Dienstes zu Problemen führen. Auf denjenigen meiner PCs, die auch aus dem Internet erreichbar sein sollen, habe ich Privacy Extensions darum deaktiviert.

Ubuntu 26.04 hat sie aber beim Upgrade wieder aktiviert, und schon waren meine Nextcloud (samt Passwort-Tresor), mein Paperless, mein SearXNG, mein MollySocket, mein Calibre, mein LibreTranslate, mein LanguageTool... nicht mehr erreichbar.

Na großartig. Bei Ubuntu 26.04 hat sich bei der Konfiguration der IPv6 Privacy Extensions etwas geändert. Die Konfigurationsdatei ist nicht mehr da, wo sie bisher immer war (/etc/sysctl.d/10-ipv6-privacy.conf). Und jetzt sind sie offenbar standardmäßig aktiviert. Heißt, ich erreiche meinen Mini-PC von außerhalb nur noch via IPv4.

This release introduced several critical low-level changes and improvements that are causing a slower-than-usual turnaround for some upstream packages. While developers work through these complexities, we remain in "stability first" mode.
