Das Stück ist eine bissige Satire, die sowohl politische als auch menschliche Schwächen und Absurditäten aufdeckt. Eine Kritik an der Machtpolitik und der Korruption von Herrschern – bearbeitet und neu interpretiert von Robert Wilson.
In Alfred Jarrys provokanten und schockierenden Theaterstück „König Ubu“ (franz. Ubu Roi) geht es um die groteske und satirische Darstellung von Macht, Gier und Tyrannei. Die Hauptfigur, Père Ubu, wird von seiner Frau Mère Ubu angestachelt, den König von Polen, König Wenceslas, zu stürzen. Nach der Ermordung des Königs und seiner Familie besteigt Ubu den Thron und führt eine Reihe von brutalen, willkürlichen und ungerechten Handlungen durch, die das Land ins Chaos stürzen.
Das Stück wurde erstmals 1896 aufgeführt und gilt als Vorläufer und wichtiger Einfluss für den späteren absurden und surrealistischen Theaterstil.
