PRONOUNS
Allow me to share this perspective as a Panamanian who was raised in the Canal Zone and then came to the United States when he was 10 years old to attend private, Catholic schools until high school graduation. It was a sheltered upbringing, by design of course by loving parents. Still, I want to be clear about something often taken for granted.I cannot support hatred of individuals. I do not accept skin color or LGBTQ+ as a reason for poor treatment of other people. This has never been more needed, especially in education and online spaces like this one, given the level of hate and bias.
Being who you are should not result in blind bias or hatred. I reject that and the frames that people have adopted that result in such hate.
As a Latinx who grew up in the Republic of Panama and then Texas, I have my own perspective.
My own identity as a cisgender (he/him/his), a bilingual/bicultural speaker, a person caught between two cultures, I have not suffered the slings and arrows of bias, prejudice that I can only ally with, including #Black #LGBTQ+ #IndigenousPeoples.
Since I speak and write in Standard English, I enjoy a level of white privilege due to my skin color (from my Swedish father) and my last name (“Guhlin” is Swedish, not Latino), I know that my life experience does not give me the authority to speak in more certain terms.
So, I offer my perspective in this space in a tentative way, and hope that I can learn with and from others.

HISD superintendent stars in his own musical, “depicting how the new superintendent will rekindle the extinguished spirits of burnt-out teachers, give hope to hopeless students, and bestow a visionary plan to save public education.” Teachers were not amused. #hisd #txed https://www.texasobserver.org/houston-isd-takeover-the-musical/

“We’re addressing all these manufactured crises that don’t have any real direct existential connection to where Texans live and what they need: great public schools,” said Pastor Charles Johnson and Charles Luke of @pastors4txkids in this Q&A. texasobserver.org/abbott-school-… #txlege, #txed https://www.texasobserver.org/abbott-school-vouchers-special-session/

As a former teacher, I know this bill would discourage my former students from reading. For many years, it was sound pedagogical practice to give students a choice in what they read. This bill is taking education backwards. #txed #txlege https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2023/04/13/bill-requiring-texas-schools-to-tell-parents-what-books-kids-check-out-passes/?sailthru_id=626c33e69dd2ea034f0d7432&utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Politics%202023-04-18&utm_term=Politics

This is really sad. Wheatley students in this article are blaming themselves for the TEA takeover of HISD when it is the state that has failed students- by imposing a system of testing over educating and now by threatening to close this local school. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/education/article/hisd-state-takeover-phillis-wheatley-high-school-17826054.php #txed #education
