“Wound Man” is an illustration which first appeared in European surgical texts during the Middle Ages. It laid out schematically the various wounds a person might suffer in battle or in accidents, with accompanying text stating treatments. Tag yourself as a wound. 😂

Three glass eyes with portable velvet carrying case and mirror, c.1870. These were likely meant to be carried by an ocularist – someone who specialized in making and fitting prosthetic eyes – to assist them in making the best possible match to the patient’s remaining eye.

This wax model of a human head from the 19th century shows the internal structure of the brain, complete with its protective covering, the meninges, the eye, cheek, neck and jaw. Wax models were used for teaching anatomy to medical students or as part of popular anatomy shows.

I wrote “Blogging the Revolution” on Cliopatria in 2005, and it’s a bit of a historical document at this point, but it still speaks to me. Having historians in constant, casual conversation, semi-casual argumentation, resource swapping, and project development has been, and continues to be a net good. I hope that #Histodon can take up what #Twitterstorians had, what HNN was, and keep our minds moving.
