He always intended to resign. He was using the poll as a way to save face, like he was doing it to appease the masses. In reality, he was doing it to appease his Saudi Arabian investors/bosses.

The worst thing that could happen to the Fediverse now is that Musk actually honors the (presumable) result of his current poll and steps down as head of Twitter. I bet a lot of people would gladly go back, making both unattractive in the end.

I find it a bit unsettling when dystopian fiction that felt a bit far fetched only a few years ago is suddenly seen as a perfectly functional idea by the richest person in the world.

Here Mae, the protagonist of Dave Eggers’s The Circle (2013), is proposing to move voting to the the Circle platform to be able to “take the temperature of everyone at any time” and to achieve “a new level of participatory democracy”
