  3. Are there any functioning tools out there that are paying for #TwitterAPI access so that they can continue to offer great tools like #fedifinder #movetodon #Twitodon #debirdify etc used to be able to offer? i.e. helping to find your #Twitter #X contacts on #Mastodon?

"The new Twitter is changing rapidly — study it before it’s too late. ... [X] rapidly changes into something new and frightening, we risk paying too little attention. ... A small group of 7 accounts, many unknown a year ago, were racking up hundreds of millions of views each day, out-performing standard news accounts by an order of magnitude and exercising significant influence on the discourse around the war."

  6. If you're using #Twitter and you need to batch-save tweets from some feeds and don't want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for the API, and you don't need it to run completely automatically, I made a Ruby gem that extracts tweet data from browser JSON responses: github.com/mackuba/bad_pigeon #TwitterAPI

  8. If any of you have opinions on the best uses of the Twitter API, then now is your chance to tell the Threads developers what they should build: threads.net/@0xjessel/post/Cwh

I am surprised that they are soliciting this so directly. They might be willing to build what people want based on your feedback if you see anything missing.

This developer even speaks frankly about Activitypub as an intended future thing so I think it's coming.

  12. @BaronD You can ask that from @eib but I'm not sure they're active any more. I've relayed at twitter.com/nemobis/status/167 . Currently #ResPublicae is still half broken due to #TwitterAPI changes but hopefully we're not missing alt text where available.

  14. @egonw Seems a bit overkill: who's going to to crosslink proprietary identifiers other than Wikidata? (They could even be personal data, so it helps to have some indication of notability to override that.)

But maybe someone who's already collecting them (or has and doesn't mind losing #TwitterAPI access) could try #Wikibase (socialblade.com ?). Waive the #DatabaseRights on the SPARQL endpoint and see how long it takes until the source of 99 % of the PD data sues. Useful precedent!

  20. This is a terrible #Twitter experience I had yesterday:
    - Click on a posted twitter link in another app.
    - That app tries to open the tweet in its internal browser.
    - Fail because I'm not logged in on that app's browser, so I'm redirected to the Twitter login page.
    - Choose the menu option to open it in the Twitter app (great!).
    - Twitter app asks me to create a new account.
    - Grab the URL from the original post and paste it into search in the Twitter app.
    - App fails to find the tweet.
    - Cut out all but the username in the URL and search on that.
    - Scroll through the tweets and find a popular recent tweet. Assume that's the one from the post.
    - Laugh and leave positive feedback on the post.

Bonus step: Complain about it on Mastodon.

  22. The only thing bust for me in using Twitter for authorisation is that the 1.0 API request for the logged in user, Get user/me, is either switched off or requires money, the 2.0 API request /2/me should be ok .I really only need the screen_name and id_str so it's a bit of an over kill.

  23. @xor I also see more #TwitterAPI terminations this week: the source of @helsinkikuvaa went silent. :(

Let's see if the operator gets more interested in the fediverse now.

  28. It seems like the #TwitterAPI has been turned off for real this time. #Fedifinder doesn't work anymore.

I don't know yet, if I will keep working on it. I don't even have the energy to think about it at the moment.

  30. It looks like Twitter is setting the stage for things to come for other API providers.

  38. CW: Musk's move to start charging heavily for API access is backfiring

#Musk learning in real time that, if you're not selling to dedicated fans like with Tesla, you need to win over customers; you can't coerce them. And that as social media company specifically, you've got as much to lose as they do when you cut off major users.
