"Watch through The Twilight Zone, and you’ll find yourself spotting no end of familiar faces: Julie Newmar, Burt Reynolds, Robert Redford, Elizabeth Montgomery, William Shatner, even Buster Keaton. The 1963 episode 'He’s Alive' is at least doubly notable in that respect, featuring as it does a young (but in acting sensibility, almost fully formed) Dennis Hopper as Peter Vollmer, a ne’er-do-well made into an aspiring dictator by none other than Adolf Hitler. Played by Curt Conway, a specialist in doctors, judges, and other authority figures, the undead Führer offers his young disciple instructions like the above, from an early scene before his identity is revealed.
"'How do you move a mob, Mr. Vollmer? How do you excite them? How do you make them feel as one with you?' Hitler asks. The answer, which he then provides, is first to join them: 'When you speak to them, speak to them as if you were a member of the mob. Speak to them in their language, on their level. Make their hate your hate. If they are poor, talk to them of poverty. If they are afraid, talk to them of their fears. And if they are angry, Mr. Vollmer… if they are angry, give them objects for their anger. But most of all, the thing that is most of the essence, Mr. Vollmer, is that you make this mob an extension of yourself.'
"If accused of scapegoating minorities, he should address the throng thus: 'Should I tell you who are the minorities? Should I tell you? We! We are the minorities.' Soon, we see Peter in full neo-Nazi gear delivering just such a harangue, thoroughly Hopper-ized in diction, to a modestly attended rally. How could these ordinary-looking attendees be a minority? 'Because patriotism is a minority. Because love of country is the minority. Because to live in a free, white America seems to be of a minority opinion!'
"Though hardly artful, this rhetoric eventually makes him into a popular figure, albeit one whose rise is cut short when he turns to conspiracy to accelerate his rise to power.
"And what of the spirit of Hitler? 'Where will he go next, this phantom from another time, this resurrected ghost of a previous nightmare?' Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling asks in his episode-closing monologue. 'Any place, every place where there’s #hate, where there’s prejudice, where there’s #bigotry.' It was against such broad social phenomena that Serling so often used his scripts to argue, and with 'He’s Alive,' he made use of an unusually vivid ideological example.
"A veteran of the Second World War, which had ended less than twenty years earlier, Serling surely had even fresher memories of the threat of Hitler than did the general American public — and understood even more clearly what could happen if those memories were to fade away."

Originally after being cited, Marling's attorney assumed the small suburban city would return his projection equipment and drop charges, but angry officials retained "outside counsel and private attorney to act as prosecutor, and they prosecuted this to the bitter end” which prompted the case to continue for years as Marling counter sued the bedroom community in #federalcourt for alleged violations of his #FirstAmendment and #FourthAmendment rights, as well as false arrest, among other legal claims that personally named city officials and #police personnel who pursued the charges. Named in Marling's suit were #CityAttorney Martin Lysons, city manager Joe Gorton, ex top cop Craig Stevens, current #PoliceChief Denton Carlson, Sgt. Michael Pistello, Officer Rick Gonzalez, pvt attorney Lance Bayer and city employee Karen McHenry-Smith. The first alleged criminal conspiratorial act by the local govt occured when petty police lied in their report about the spot where Marling even had the projector, claiming it was propped up against a traffic light on a sidewalk rather than placed in a landscaping bed.
From there, and even after an acquittal in an actual local court for the bogus citation, Marling filed a complaint alleging numerous civil violations, including of the First, Fourth and 14th amendments and the #CivilRights Act, as well as false imprisonment.
Marling said he hopes the legal #settlement discourages crackdowns on #activism in the future.
“For the police to try to detain in this fashion is illegal — I wasn’t violating any laws,” Marling said. “I guess you could say it was a slap on the wrist to try to encourage cities to not do this.” We only got to this point where the city finally "settled" and agreed to pay #legal costs and admit no #wrongdoing after years of #litigation.

Updated Apr 06, 2025"Newsweek has created a map showing the European nations where governments and companies have rejected a U.S. directive applying President Donald Trump's rollback of #diversity, #equity and #inclusion (DEI) policies to American federal contractors abroad, which include #France, #Belgium, #Spain and #Denmark.
"The directive warns that DEI programs may disqualify firms from U.S. federal contracts—even those based abroad.
"According to several European officials, companies have received letters from the U.S. government warning that Trump's executive order banning 'illegal' DEI programs would be enforced internationally. The letters reportedly demand that companies confirm within five days that they comply with U.S. federal anti-discrimination laws and do not operate any DEI programs that violate them.
"Newsweek has contacted the State Department, via email, for a response. It has also contacted U.S. embassies at several other European countries to ask if they have also received these letters.
"The United Kingdom's Office for Equality and Opportunity declined to comment to Newsweek saying it is 'not aware of this letter being sent to UK businesses' at this time.
Why It Matters
"The move marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration's effort to dismantle DEI initiatives across government and industry—and expands that campaign across borders. The executive order has drawn strong objections in some European capitals.
French companies and officials were among the first to respond. Aurore Bergé, France's equality minister, denounced the letters in an interview with BFMTV, calling them "a form, obviously, of interference" and "a sort of ultimatum laid out by the US embassy in our country."

By Timothy W. Ryback"Ninety-two years ago this month, on Monday morning, January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed the 15th chancellor of the #WeimarRepublic. In one of the most astonishing political transformations in the history of democracy, Hitler set about destroying a constitutional republic through constitutional means. What follows is a step-by-step account of how Hitler systematically disabled and then dismantled his country’s democratic structures and processes in less than two months’ time—specifically, one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours, and 40 minutes. The minutes, as we will see, mattered.
"Hans Frank served as Hitler’s private attorney and chief legal strategist in the early years of the Nazi movement. While later awaiting execution at Nuremberg for his complicity in Nazi atrocities, Frank commented on his client’s uncanny capacity for sensing 'the potential weakness inherent in every formal form of law' and then ruthlessly exploiting that weakness. Following his failed Beer Hall Putsch of November 1923, Hitler had renounced trying to overthrow the Weimar Republic by violent means but not his commitment to destroying the country’s #democratic system, a determination he reiterated in a Legalitätseid—'legality oath'—before the Constitutional Court in September 1930. Invoking Article 1 of the Weimar constitution, which stated that the government was an expression of the will of the people, Hitler informed the court that once he had achieved power through legal means, he intended to mold the government as he saw fit. It was an astonishingly brazen statement.
