Long Tailed Shrike. A UK Rarity

It’s hard to credit but the Long Tailed Shrike is still sowing up at Eastleach in Gloucestershire. It was first sighted around the beginning of July, and I rode Morrigan up there to try and photograph it in the first week of August.

Its normal range is the scrubland of Asia, so gods only know what it’s doing here. I gather there have been others in the past but very few.

A pretty thing with its bandit mask and pale red chest, but look at that hooked beak! I was wondering why a medium sized songbird would have such a vicious looking beak, and it turns out they are indeed carnivorous, catching small mammals and reptiles.

It was a nice day for a ride and with a rare bird spot too. Not that I discovered it… my thanks go to the Gloster Birder for the alert.

A #birder question from a non-ornithologist which came to mind after hearing a #BirdNote segment on #NPR.

The piece reveals that some bird calls change over the years and others have been stable for millennia. One maybe 500kYrs.

That was seemingly deduced based on comparing calls of populations separated at a specific point in their history (prob thru DNA analysis).

So a #question…

My brain contains some random birding knowledge collated from goodness knows where.

Was walking along Llanberis Lake yesterday when my mate pointed out a black-and-white diver-like bird and pondered what it was.

From out of nowhere my brain said, "Merganser?".

I don't know when/if I've ever seen a Merganser before.

On getting home he Googled it, and yes, in all likelihood it was a Merganser! :blobcatshrug:

This sweet little cinnamon-coloured bird is critically endangered in north-eastern NSW and South East Queensland, but a partnership between Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is offering hope for this special species.

Eight captive-bred eastern bristlebirds (Dasyornis brachypterus) were recently released in the Border Ranges region, bringing the total number of birds to about 45 from its lowest point of only 15.

I'm no #twitcher but when we #travel I do tend to take a few shots of #birds, especially since they're often of a type we don't see at home. It's often only when we return that I find out what it was I've photographed, although on this occasion in #Argentina we'd been told it was a Patagonian Mockingbird.
