  1. @leo @mikahsargent A friend was just listening to the May 3rd #Twit on her Siri HomePods and she just told me she thinks ALL PODCAST HOSTS' VOICES should be ignored by smart speakers!

Of COURSE that would mean Alexa wouldn't work for you ... but she thinks that should be your punishment for saying that "activation word" out loud multiple times during that 5 minute segment! 😂

Evidently y'all kept activating her echo in her kitchen! She ended up unplugging it! 😉

  3. Finished first #CyberSecurity class for #CollegeCreditPlus (college classes for high school students) certification. Got an A.

The reason is simple -- 15 years of #SecurityNow with Steve Gibson (@SGgrc) on #TWIT.

Also, it was summer break from #k12 work, so had time to do the work. We'll see what happens during the school year, when I'm busy with #ESOL (#ESL) stuff.

Next fall, I'll be teaching cyber security to high school students for college credit. And doing ESOL stuff.

    #education

  4. Got accepted for a program to credential high school teachers to teach college classes (#Ohio's #CollegeCreditPlus program). Doing the paperwork stuff now - so much fun.

I'm an #ESOL teacher. I'll be taking classes to get credentialed to teach college-level #CyberSecurity. Have to take 4 or 5 graduate-level classes. Might have to do a pre-req or two.

Luckily, I've been listening to #TWiT and #SecurityNow for over 10 years at this point (maybe closer to 15?), so I feel pretty well prepared.

  5. “Good lord, we’re screwed”: Emily Blunt begs Hollywood not to sign “terrifying” AI star Tilly Norwood. Emily Blunt is the latest Hollywood star to voice alarm over the rise of artificial intelligence in entertainment, specifically AI performers. #acting #voiceover #vo #va #voiceartist #AI #TWiT #tech #technology #technews #technologynews #HighTech #TechToday #TechThatMatters dailydot.com/entertainment/emi

  6. @leo listening to #TWiT 903. Re: #AirDrop and #Apple turning it off in #China, I understand how it can be seen that Apple is cooperating with China Govt.

I also can see that people have been #swatted there - caught with illicit documents and information that were airdropped to their phones.

A bad-actor airdrops something to someone else, then turns them in for having something they shouldn't have on their phone.

I don't know who is right.

  7. STUPIDEST ARTICLE EVER. NEVER USE A TOOTHPICK IN YOUR PHONE'S PORTS. SIMPLY USE YOUR VACUUM! "My Phone Wouldn't Charge but This Simple Trick Fixed It. 10. ✝️ Millennial saint: Pope Leo XIV said the canonization of Carlo Acutis will take place on September 7. Acutis, who was 15 when he died from leukemia, used his computing skills to spread awareness of the Catholic faith by creating a website that documented reports of miracles. cnn.com/2025/06/13/europe/carl #faith #love #TWiT #tech #technology #technews #technologynews #HighTech #TechToday #TechThatMatters #faithandtech

  11. Everyday Burdens - I have come to realize that email spam filters are a lot like being taught the Bible, faith, God, good and evil. Teaching it what's not junk/bad what is good/right is hard! There are limitations to understanding and acceptance and this doesn't just apply to children. This is actually some big news: a lot of folks originally joined the Tweeter because of #Diggnation and #TWiT hyping up Twitter in its earliest days. I know I joined because of them (esp. Leo talking about it all the time)

Well Kevin Rose, founder of #Digg, said if he got 1,000 likes to a post he made on Threads, he'd delete his Tweeter account.

He got them, and he did.

Makes me think - if I get 200 likes here in the #fediverse on this post, pointing out Kevin's post, I'll delete CoffeeGeek's Tweeter account too. (I promise, this isn't likebait lol!)

EDIT. OMG. Me and my big mouth! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤓. Well, you all got there, and I will follow through, once I download my archive.

  16. Weekly output: Symbotic, Most Innovative Companies in robotics, Redwood Materials, Most Innovative Companies in manufacturing, Matter security label, SpaceX and Starship, AT&T and AST SpaceMobile, Android 15, Waymo, This Week in Tech

If you’ve been wondering why it’s been so long since I last had a byline with Fast Company, here’s your answer: I’ve spent a non-trivial part of the last three months helping to put together the robotics and manufacturing parts of the publication’s Most Innovative Companies list.

(In my nonexistent spare time, I also wrote a post for Patreon readers about my roadmap to getting our house off the methane gas grid–starting with the appliance that represents the smallest part of that fossil-fuel problem.)

3/19/2024: How Symbotic is speeding up warehouse robots, even in the dark, Fast Company

This piece profiles one of the finalists in the MIC robotics category–a warehouse-robot developer whose customers include Target and Walmart, and which the editors ranked number 34 among the 50 most innovative firms in the world.

3/19/2024: The most innovative companies in robotics for 2024, Fast Company

In addition to Symbotic, Doodle Labs, Agility Robotics, Locus RoboticsDusty Robotics, Gecko Robotics, Nearthlab, Opentrons, Stratom, and Teleo earned MIC nods and brief writeups from me.

3/19/2024: Here’s how Redwood Materials is creating a circular economy for lithium-ion batteries, Fast Company

Here, I took a closer look at the company that ranked 19th among the top 50, a startup moving to scale up EV battery recycling with some help from the government.

3/19/2024: The most innovative companies in manufacturing for 2024, Fast Company

Our other MIC nominees in this category: Group14 Technologies, Holcim (written by another Fast Co. contributor, Ted C. Fishman), Mighty Buildings, FormlabsNucor, Cellares, Doosan Bobcat, Pyrowave, and Timken.

3/19/2024: Watch Out for This Blue Badge on the Next Smart Home Device You Buy, PCMag

The organization behind the Matter connected-gadget standard are now moving to sync up their security efforts with government labeling programs.

3/19/2024: SpaceX Expects Next Starship Launch in About 6 Weeks, PCMag

SpaceX president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell shared some news about the progress of the company’s Starship project and Starlink efforts during a panel at the Satellite 2024 show in D.C.

3/22/2024: AT&T, AST SpaceMobile Promise ‘True Broadband’ From Satellite Phone Service, PCMag

I filed a second piece from Satellite about AT&T’s plans to fill in dead zones using an upcoming constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites operated by its partner AST SpaceMobile.

3/22/2024: Android 15’s Second Developer Preview Augments Satellite Roaming, PCMag

Space-based broadband showed up in my coverage a third time when Google announced a new set of features coming to the next version of Android that include software to report when your phone has switched to a satellite connection.

3/22/2024: Waymo Wants You to Stop Worrying and Learn to Love the Robotaxi, PCMag

Thursday, I had to rush from Satellite to a Waymo event–a good use case not for a driverless car but for a bikeshare ride–to catch a panel about road safety that I found unintentionally revealing.

3/24/2024: This Week in Tech 972: Judicial Whimsy, TWiT.tv

I showed up at this podcast for the first time since August and joined host Leo Laporte and two people whose expertise I’ve leaned on before in my stories–game developer and activist Brianna Wu and lawyer Cathy Gellis–to talk about the Department of Justice’s antitrust lawsuit against Apple, whether the government should ban business transactions with TikTok, Supreme Court cases involving social-media content moderation, and other recent tech-policy topics.

  27. @mvexel @brewsterkahle Thanks for the boost, Martijn! I'm huge fan of #OpenStreetMap and the work you've done on #MapRoulette. I could swear we did a story on it years ago when I was working on #TWiT, but I can't find any record of it.

You and the folks at OpenStreetMap.org need volunteers, too! If anyone here loves #OpenSource projects and wants a fun challenge, they should go to maproulette.org and help add places and fix data in Open Street Map. They need people to add details about everything from highways in #SaudiArabia to #museums in #France and barbershops in the #BayArea.

We've all learned a lesson this past month about how crucial it is to have open source backups to the corporate services we depend on. There's nothing keeping #Google from sending #Maps to the #GoogleGraveyard like #Reader, #Hangouts, and all the useful editing tools that Maps used to have. I'm going to try switching to Open Street Maps, and maybe even track down some US museums websites for you!

  28. TWiT fans, it’s been too long!

I’ll be on the show this SUNDAY, NOV 2!

…although for me it’ll be ~5:00 a.m. Monday. At least I’m fun when I’m barely awake. You never know what I’ll say.

  29. Throwback Thursday – June 26, 2025

While in San Francisco in 2018 for the Asian Lunar New Year Parade, I made a side trip up to Petaluma to visit the This Week in Tech (TWiT) studios. After catching that weeks recording of the TWiT podcast, I met the host, Leo Laporte, and sat on the set while talking with him.
