Fifteen is another favorite of mine: "Needed ordinance changes". Our local code is very old and fights itself and is reflective of the technologies and priorities of yesteryear. This will be a ton of work but it is much needed. We know our dueling speed limit regulations are in this but probably much more is coming. #TwentyIsPlenty

Switching 50km/h speed limits to 30km/h would protect cyclists while barely affecting commutes, research finds
It has long been argued that lowering the speed limits to 20 MPH (roughly 32 km/h) dramatically increases the collision victim's chance of survival. In Seattle, all the neighbourhood streets now have a speed limit of 20 MPH, but IMO it should be even lower—e.g. 15 MPH, or for narrow streets, even 10 MPH.

CW: Driving speed limits
20mph zones aren't anti-motorist: they reduce crashes and car insurance premiums.

Oh my look at that: lower speed limits lower car insurance costs.
“Some UK insurers are observing that areas where 20mph zones have been introduced result in lower levels of claim frequency – a key factor in the cost of car insurance.”

Another great video by @notjustbikes where he totally destroys the arguments against 20mph (30kmph) speed limits on city streets.
I’m lucky to live in a city where 20mph is now the norm, and was introduced before our car-brained Prime Minister sided with the car lobby and right-wingers to campaign against lowering the limits. As a result, our streets feel safer and are much quieter than those I grew up around. 🤫

Here's my proposal to allow for lower speed limits on roads with unprotected bike lanes, on bike boulevards, and on roads without sidewalks: https://benlk.com/2023/11/22/speed-limit-street-safety/
I'm working with State Rep. Ismail Mohamed (D-03) to get this before the Ohio House next year.

@bike I hear you, and perhaps the opening bid should be 15mph in the initial bill, then amended up to 20mph as a negotiating tactic, to match #TwentyIsPlenty campaigns.

#Oxford's gambit is about reducing the number of drivers who can perpetrate violence on the streets.
#London has lowered the speed limit (#TwentyIsPlenty) which blunts the violence even if the number of cars stays the same.
Both strategies save lives.

Pedestrians know this instinctively but to see it laid out in a graph is a gut punch.
At 20 mph, 3 out of every 4 drivers (75%) yield to a pedestrian in the basic crosswalk.
At just 30 mph, that rate drops to 1 in 8 drivers (12%).Above 35 mph drivers don't care: basic or high visibility crosswalk: they don't stop.

@giulio_mattioli don’t forget it will be national default speed limit in Wales from this year, and also already throughout London and Edinburgh! I’m starting research on the success of the 30kmh policy in the UK context this year. We’ve gone from a tiny fraction to 1/3 of UK population coverage in the last decade! #twentyisplenty
