We had local meetings of online people back in the BBS days, called it a B*A*S*H -- probably an acronym, and yes, in the days of a popular TV series.
Later we had MeetUps, long before an event company took that name, and then TweetUps, where we'd all get together in person so we could sit with our heads down, on our phones, tweeting to the people sitting right beside us.
And we had Get2gethers too, more online/in-person parties. Fun times!

@BrianEnigma But that was how we first used it. meetings of twitter people was #tweetup — morphed in 15yrs to just be the same thing.

TLDR: I helped people I know give the #Fediverse a go, but now only I remain on the platforms and I don't know how to feel about it.
It's natural attrition. Priciples are one thing, but people join social media for different reasons. They can enjoy their vanishingly small amount of free time however they like, and it isn't on the #Fediverse for now. They've slowly stopped posting, and the last holdouts made it 6 months before going back to #Twitter.
It doesn't matter to to most people that their attention is being manipulated for an additional click. The entertainment and spectacle is enough to keep them addicted and yet also miserable in one way or another. We all share and helped each other overcome. Trauma bonding I guess?
I'm invited to an IRL #Tweetup to someone leaving #Korea this weekend and despite being invited, I only heard about it through another mutual friend because I was off #Twitter and mean to keep it that way. I'm glad I get to say goodbye when this person leaves. I wonder what people have been up to these past few months!
When this group of folks I met on Twitter and befriended years ago leaves #Korea, I don't have a reliable way to meet new people I could hang out with as easily. Now that people are returning to #Twitter and other algorithmic generated experiences, I'm here on the #Fediverse wondering why people would go back. People tried #Mastodon, people left, and I am here wondering why they don't get something out if the experience like I did. Plenty of interesting people all over the world here. Just not much happening in Korea on topics of interest I guess? I still do want to meet people and hang out, but everyone wants to find their people, right?
I can find news and read interesting articles just as well on #Fediverse services even though the Twitter Bridge services have stopped, and my mental health is less impacted by horrific news and gossip on #Twitter, which was my goal in making #Mastodon, and then #Calckey my platform of choice for now. I'm not locked in when I am on the #Fediverse, that's the point.
The benefits of being somewhere not driven by algorithmic content are numerous, but if I have to string together a paper string and cup to just get invited or meet a vanishingly small number of people that live in #Korea that I want to be associated with, picking the #Fediverse because of principles makes socializing that much harder.
You can talk about the #Fediverse benefits all you want, and they are real, but the threads where people are chatting and making plans happen some places, and not others. I want to hang out with friends who make an effort and want me there. I don't need ideological purity in others but I am surprised how little people are willing to try to make things better.
The amount of time I have to socialize is somewhat limited as a person living abroad or even as an adult in general. You always need to make an effort, but sometimes you can try and still fail to bring people along with you. You can only lead them to the #Fediverse, you can't make anyone stay. #TwitterMigration #Korea -

It was maybe 2010 when I visited my first #Tweetup in Switzerland. Yesterday I had the great pleasure to meet the #ThaiTwitter community from #Bangkok. Great night!

eh I can't stop tooting. forgive me, BUT.. I saw a thing on here just now about people not wanting to leave the 'thing' that is that other site and how they should know better than to stay somewhere toxic and stuff..
but you know what
lots of people were there back when it was very much like this site. back when tweetups, pubcrawls, real world friendships through online banter became a thing. before the advertisers and journalists (and.. influencers) discovered it.
they should not be lumped up into that narrative.. they found and formed their communities. if they don't wanna leave the bad site because they were there first... who are we to have a whinge about it, ya know.
