  1. CW: NZ - Dirty Politics II - Maiki Sherman

    The National Party has resorted to using Dirty Politics again, this time with Ani O'Brien playing the part of Cameron (Slug Juice) Slater.

    Yes, TVNZ's political editor Maiki Sherman did call another reporter a 'faggot', in response to something he'd said to her. But it was it was 12 months ago during a National Party drinks session and she did apologise at the time.

    With Luxon's leadership under pressure, National decided it was timely to flick the story to the terf O'Brien and another good journalist becomes the story then is lost.

    Here's a whole bunch of reactions to Sherman being "hounded" into resigning. Most commentators are equally disgusted by TVNZ's decision to hang out their star reporter to dry with no obvious support in place.

    I'm old enough to remember when TVNZ was still a public service broadcaster.

  2. The character assassination of TVNZ political journalist Maiki Sherman;

    rnz.co.nz/news/media-technolog

    ... reminds me of what happened to Metiria Turei, and to Benjamin Doyle. Old scuttlebutt dug up, and then a campaign if sustained harassment of the person, the institution they're part of, and in Metiria's case, her whānau.

  3. Is anyone else out there fed up with the new TVNZ+ app? It’s broken on our Apple TV box. Works on our TV set (WebOS), but only in a very flakey way. We also get strange momentary dips in sound volume quite frequently. #tvnz

  4. Have to say, I'm quite astounded at seeing #tvnz outsourced their new website/apps. If their leadership does not understand that their online platforms are core strategic assets for a media company in this age, that developing the ability to own those applications in house is key to their success, TVNZ needs new leadership.

  5. Warning: Don’t accept the latest update of the TVNZ+ app. It’s appallingly bad, playing the wrong programme and not allowing you to resume where you stopped watching during your last session. #TVNZ

  6. Q+A's Jack Tame has a good interview with Rewiring Aotearoa’s Mike Casey on the need to quickly electrify NZ’s machines to run on New Zealand-made energy and ramp up rooftop solar. I like the way he pitches this as the clearly obvious and sensible solution, which it clearly and obviously is.

  8. CW: TVNZ News is geographically challenged

    TVNZ reports a sad death following a motor accident, but their lede contains two major errors. They say:

    "A person has died of their injuries a week and a half after a two-vehicle crash on a Dunedin motorway."

    The accident actually happened out in the wops in an area called Clarks Junction, which the story confirms. For those unfamiliar with the area, you leave Dunedin, pass through Mosgiel and then Outram until you get to Lee Stream. Then you carry on a bit further towards Middlemarch and you finally arrive at Clarks Junction.

    Not only is it 50kms from Dunedin, but SH87 is certainly *not* a motorway. There's never any funding for motorways in the lower South Island.

    Local journalists would not make this silly mistake. And TVNZ's Auckland crew were too lazy to check the actual location in Google Maps.

  9. Back in late 2023, I said of TVNZ

    "If left to limp along as a for-profit, the few really useful things it still owns (free-to-air broadcast infrastructure, studios, etc) are at risk of neglect and asset stripping."

    disintermedia.net.nz/reimagini

    What I didn't know at the time was that the broadcast infrastructure is actually owned by a different SOE, Kordia.

    But the cancellation of Fair Go and other flagship TVNZ shows was an example of what I meant.

  10. Watching #TheRideLife on Duke. They put subtitles up for a couple of English northerners. What? The Korean-American host (actor Sung Kang) understood them fine and Iʼm sure most US people would, too! #TV #TVNZ

  11. Talley's defamation case against TVNZ has failed.

    In 2023 TVNZ aired news stories using whistle-blowers who alleged safety failures in Talley's fish factories. Talley's case belly-flopped because they could not prove any pecuniary loss. However...

    "Justice Jagose said that if Talley’s had proven the publication of the 3 July 2021 broadcast had caused a pecuniary loss, he would have upheld TVNZ’s defence of responsible communication on a matter of public interest, to dismiss Talley’s proceeding."

  12. @phil_stevens

    I have found #TVNZ media and political polling has historically and disproportionately favoured the right.

    Although this is just a reckon I also recognise the power of polls that favour one side over another are used as a political tool to influence the less informed voters and unfortunately it’s uninformed voters that makeup a majority of the #NZPol voting population.

    If trying to find a silver lining to the alarming poll results yesterday I would suggest that the poll numbers calming the waters around Luxon’s leadership could end up favouring the left in the next election. Never has a NZ prime minister been so unpopular with the public as Mr “I’m wealthy and sorted” Luxon and should cost the RW the next election.

  21. For those who think Jack Tame is biased against the right because he regularly exposes right-wing politicians and their bullshit non-answers, here he is doing exactly the same thing to Chris Hipkins;

  27. I didn’t mind #TheChaseNZ. Not a bad start, Paul could pick up the pace a bit, and the direction isn’t quite there (felt a tad Australian). But for a first entry, a fun watch, and easy questions to sucker future contestants into. Paul is funnier here than when he played Benny on Crossroads. #TVNZ1 #TVNZ #TV

  28. Scary how many 'Shows you canʼt miss this month' previews are on TV1. Itʼs the prime-time news and no one is buying commercials. Life in the worst performing economy in the OECD. #TVNZ #Aotearoa #NZ
