  2. Viola Ford Fletcher, one of the last known survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre, died today at age 111. After decades of silence for fear of reprisals, she wrote a book about her experiences, "Don't Let Them Bury My Story," which was published in 2023. “I could never forget the charred remains of our once-thriving community, the smoke billowing in the air, and the terror-stricken faces of my neighbors,” she wrote. Here's more from @AssociatedPress.

  3. An important story told with baffling inconsistency. Greenwood Rising gestures at history but never quite grasps it—turning the rise of Black Wall Street into a collage of anachronisms, stock footage, and missed opportunities. The real Greenwood deserved more care, more clarity, and far more weight.

The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, in which a prosperous Black neighborhood in Oklahoma was destroyed and up to 300 people were killed, was not committed by an uncontrolled mob but was the result of “a coordinated, military-style attack” by white citizens, the Justice Department said in a report released Friday.
The report, stemming from an investigation announced in September, is the first time that the federal government has given an official, comprehensive account of the events of May 31 and June 1, 1921, in the Tulsa neighborhood of Greenwood. Although it formally concluded that, more than a century later, no person alive could be prosecuted, it underscored the brutality of the atrocities committed.

  10. Bynum, who will select the cmte members, has previously demurred on the idea of financial #reparations.

In 2020, he told #Tulsa-based TV station that distributing cash payments “divides the community on something that we really need to be united around.” Debate over compensation led to the cancellation of an event commemorating the bloodshed the next year.

On Thurs, Bynum said he wants the cmte to explore types of reparations beyond cash payments.

During the 1921 massacre, a White mob destroyed #Greenwood, an all-Black community nicknamed #BlackWallStreet, leaving as many as 300 Black people dead & 10k homeless.
