  2. The Montreal Gem and Mineral Show is happening at the end of the month in the main convention center (Le Palais des Congrès).

No guarantee of fantastic or samples, but many others for sure. There's always a good representation of Canadian and Quebec localities.

  3. Alkali-Nuts is a website devoted to the 400+ minerals found at Mont Saint-Hilaire, including

  4. While blue kyanite is used in jewelry, porcelain & pottery glazes, plus gets physics points as an index mineral, it’s the extraordinary ‘reindeer blood’ tenebrescent, & phosphorescent tugtupite “King of Fluorescent Minerals” which is also a gem, gaining both art and physics points for me. #MinCup25

  5. #Dioptase is an amazing colour-changing pleochroic goddess of a queen that looks as stunning as #Tugtupite - or more so.

She well deserves a crown in #MinCup25!

An international 'crystal water' stone of mystery, it also went by the names of #achrite, #emeraudine, copper emerald or #kirghisite 🥷 👑

An amazing looking explosion of a starburst of a flower shape, The centre a turquoise colour, and the edges of the "blades" or petals of the flower in darker blueish violet colour, behind it darker still.
The lowest part white with flecks of yellow or gold, so it reminds you of space with its haze making for the starburst thought.

Very dark green lustrous dioptase crystals that look almost black. This is a night queen that sparkles. And makes for sparks if you heat it up, being pyroelectric AND phleochroic, changing colour depending on how you look at it.

#CopperSilicate (CuSiO3·H2O). Its lustre is vitreous, glass-like, to sub-adamantine, so talking Wolverine shit here, folks. 😅

  6. is also found at Mont Saint-Hilaire, east of Montreal.

The Poudrette quarry is the type locality of 73 minerals, 35 of which have not been found elsewhere. It's an IUGS Geoheritage site. At this site alkaline magmas intruded platform sediments during the Cretaceous.

  7. Crown Emerald Copper, Desert Queen Dioptase!

    mineralcup.org/2025/vote/r4m02

Please vote for the pyroelectric, HOT desert mama! It's so amazing it can look like moss but is electric if you heat it up 😲

So, did someone call #electric #Mosstodon? The most arid deserts in the world have none, but grow moss-like dioptase to make up for it. The world's amazing, so spread the love & vote!
    Forbidden #broccoli or green #cauliflower?

Dioptase was first mistaken to be emerald and gets its colour and toxicity from copper. Hence, Emerald Copper and Desert Emerald nicknames! Although it's toxic - no licking! 😅 - the vivid green tones make it great for healing & the heart. 💚💎🧡

Here's some different mossy shapes to spot in different photos, if you want to look toward the ground instead of what you see in clouds! Thanks for voting!

  8. Please vote Dioptase the rare pyroelectric #TeamGreen #DesertEmerald through to go against #tugtupite in the Mineral Cup semi-finals!

    mineralcup.org/2025/vote/r3m04

    Emerald copper FTW 💚💎🧡
    We can get a #piezoelectricity versus #pyroelectricity battle for the ages! It's * #ELECTRIC * ;P

Pressure or fire, heating things up to get zappadelic, gotta love that.

    Better yet:
"As mentioned in the introduction, there is a profound relationship between pyro and piezo sensors: Every pyroelectric crystal is also a piezoelectric crystal (but not vice versa)."
Heating leads to expansion of the crystal lattice, and a measurable electric voltage.

(After the last two days seeing mass vote stuffing tampering attempts, they're auditing preliminary results, so please rope in new folks to vote for this little toxic pyro guy instead! 🍀 Thank you for voting!)

  9. Ok, mineral people, let's make it happen for Tugtupite! Who doesn't love a fluorescent reindeer blood crystal? #MinCup25 #Tugtupite mineralcup.org/2025/vote/r3m02

  10. @heyfluxay 🫡 🙏 I'd love everyone to recruit new voters for #DIOPTASE the Queen of the Desert Emeralds to beat Tugtupite in today's match and FTW!

    mineralcup.org/2025/vote/r4m02

(Edit: King of #Fluorescent #Minerals #Tugtupite, if possible! ONLY TOMORROW & IF it goes to the finale. Newcomer can try next year, too! Dioptase before a first timer!)

    mineralcup.org/2025/vote/r3m02

Anyone can vote and there's been a jump from a 50 vote difference with 853 to 900 to 942-943 just now - so it's all about getting as many new voters in as possible. 3 hours to #vote!

#Piezoelectric #pizza rock Tugtupite is the favourite mineral of #pugs & #TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles, so you make #doggo sad if you don't vote for the #beryllium #aluminium tectosilicate #gemstone. Turtle power!

  11. Hey Retro PIZZA + others!

Can I please ask everyone here to vote for :pixel_pizza: PIZZA crystal 💎 b4 midnight UK time?

    mineralcup.org/2025/vote/r3m02

Pink piezoelectric pizzacrystal #Tugtupite is named for an Inuit story about reindeer's blood & there's a chance for a "blood rock" vs blood rock final if this goes thru! :blobcat_party:

Stick it to the orange by supporting Greenland where it's from! The orange perovskite? Well, maybe, but let's say the prezdictator wannabe for wanting to take over Greenland for today. :blobfoxdealwithitfingerguns:

Tugtupite does fantastic colour changing #fluorescent things under THREE kinds of UV light, glows in the dark & turns darker red in the Sun = tenebrescence, & creates electricity under pressure!

Japan is testing piezoelectric walkways in Shibuya + Tokyo for clean electricity, so it's both an #indigenous win and a future tech one!

#MinCup25 The #goth rock glow-stick disco rave pick that comes in pink + light blue for the #trans vote! :trans_heart:

  12. I’ll grant that it’s cool that “Borg cube” perovskite could be formed in a Brown Dwarf but I’m voting for reindeer blood tugtupite “King of Fluorescent Minerals,” which is tenebrescent (changes colour in UV) & phosphorescent so gains my physics vote plus it’s also a gem on the arts front #MinCup25

(Also: revenge for stibnite and calcite!)

  13. is our second sodalite-structure (after ). Finch et al. (2016) investigated the sources of color from point defects, bonds, and coordination in the cage structure.

Tugupite is different, due to the beryllium substitution & also that the sodium atoms (large grey balls in the images) are five-fold coordinated, not four-fold.

Tugupite is (my word of the day): it changes color in daylight, and this might be useful in window blinds.

  14. Pollucite vs Tugtupite (planetary science edition - kinda)

Neither has been deteced on other planets.

Pollucite belongs to the zeolite group and is the Cs analog of analcime. Analcime was deteced on Mars by visible-near infrared spectra from orbit.

Tugtupite is a member of the feldspathoid group and can be found in alkali-rich igneous rocks. Alkali-rich (high K; Na could not be measured) basalts were measured by Venera 13 on the surface of Venus.

    #MinCup25 #Pollucite #Tugtupite

  15. @FaithfullJohn @FiddleSix @MineralCup This is great to hear! I have a SW UV lamp but rarely remember to bring it out. It’s to show some of the fluorescent rocks I collected. Dang, still packed 3 years from our move here. Time to get it out to put in the display case by a few specimens ! I will vote for #Tugtupite now.

  16. @MineralCup Ok this is another match where I’ve never heard of either mineral! Hoping some of the #Chemistry folks and #Geology people will be able to add more information about these two. All I’ve got so far is #Tugtupite because of color-changing and Greenland. Cesium sounds scary for #Pollucite. #MinCup25
Also I’ve only gotten one winner so far out of the matches. Help!
