Boss
When I was a kid and starting to become obsessed with guitar gear, there weren’t a lot of options around. My local music stores carried pedals from DoD and Boss for the most part. You could find occasional Ibanez, MXR, or Electro Harmonix pedals, but for the most part it was DoD and Boss. The few pedals I owned were DoD. Every time I took a Boss pedal for a test drive I was massively underwhelmed. Those music store visits back in the late 1980’s lead to a lifetime of not liking Boss gear. To this day I have never owned a Boss pedal because I have never played through one that I liked. The closest I’ve come is a Keeley pedal (the Super Phat Mod) which is a modified version of a Boss Blues Driver pedal. I like the Keeley pedal, but I don’t love it (unlike my Keeley D&M Drive which I absolutely adore).
I have never consciously boycotted Boss, I just never wanted anything they sold…
Until now.
A few years ago a couple of companies released super sophisticated amp load boxes. Universal Audio put out the Ox, which seems like the greatest thing since sliced bread. Unfortunately you can almost buy a car with the amount of money you need to shell out for an Ox.* Boss released a similar item called the Tube Amp Expander. The reviews I watched made the thing look pretty amazing, though maybe not quite as amazing as the Ox. The price was similar though and I never gave it a second thought.
Not long ago Boss released a new product. It’s a smaller version of the Tube Amp Expander. It’s called the Tube Amp Expander Core. It has all of the functionality I would want but at a much lower price. Granted, $700 is a ton of money for something like this (in my book, at least) and I don’t know if that price is before or after the orange shit clown’s Japanese tariffs. It is a low enough cost to make me consider it, but probably still too high to actually pull the trigger. It would be really cool to be able to run a direct signal out of my Fender Deluxe Reverb and into my Audio Interface, or even directly into my Macintosh.
…….it’s Boss though…. if I tried one out, history dictates that I would be disappointed. Still…….. oh the places I could go with a box like that. We’ll have to see how the economy holds up in the near future. There’s a really good chance the orange shit clown could collapse the whole country which would take the decision to blow $700 on a reactive load box out of my hands, you know?
Anyway, here’s a video that I can drool over as I watch it over and over again.

Randall Smith—founder of Mesa/Boogie—put up some videos on his own YouTube channel in recent days. He's basically interviewing himself.
Last summer he left the company after 55 years. It's a must watch if you're a guitar amp nerd, but still entertaining if you don't care about how distortion in a 12AX7 works.

I played some guitar this morning. Judging by the above screen shot from my Apple Watch, I may have changed up the recording workflow a smidge.
Oh yes, yes I did.
I played through a speaker. Instead of using my Fender Bassbreaker 15 and my Vox MV50 Clean amps with their direct line outputs and speaker cabinet emulation functionality, I plugged into my Fender Deluxe Reverb. In the next photo you can see that the power light is on and it is glorious.

I then did the craziest thing ever. I took the volume knob and turned it up. Way up. It wasn’t full blast, but it was close enough for a Thursday morning. In the next photo you will see proof.

The volume was a smidge under nine. Again, glorious. Spectacular. I had an overdrive pedal boosting the input signal as well and it was distorting nicely. Tube amps are just the best things ever. I should have actually brought the volume down a little as the signal was over compressing to the point of being a squashed, squirely mess, but that’s okay. I’m just making demoes, right?
I played my SG because it was out of the case and sitting on the stand next to my desk. I probably should have played my Les Paul Custom, but this was fine with me. I ended up adding rhythm guitars to one song and leads to another. Oh, and I also added vocals to two songs. Fun. I probably could have snuck in a little more 50/90 challenge work, but I had to get ready for work and didn’t want to risk being late.
The one question that remains to be asked: Are my ears still ringing (about an hour after I stopped playing)?
Why yes, yes they are.
Glorious

@Vivaldi why the 1337? Realizing #key1337 of course... but, why? Just for fun, or is there a story behind it. How'd I know. Because Oh boy! too much text always!

Alley Cat Music store is gone.I managed their website in the early 2000's. Pics of their all-tube "SRC Barker" amp line, designed by Dr David H Sarge (Fender Deluxe Black Face?).
Mark Ross, owner, passed away in 2020. I learned a lot working there. Rockabilly/Americana players taught me the inspiration of James Burton. Genuine rock-n-roll!
SRC Barker amps are still made, and Mark Ross's legacy lives on. I remember him through "Tanya Browne" and "Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band".
The "C" in SRC is for the craftsman who assembled the amps. I can't recall his name, but Mark and Dave were always present. Invaluable knowledge lost likely.

"Point-to-point" wired, all tube, hand-made amps. I enjoyed curating these images, inspired by vintage calendars. Rockabilly evolved into Americana in the mid-90's.

Looks like Alex Lifeson and Mojotone are bringing out new versions of Lifeson’s signature Lerxst amps.
That sound you are hearing right now (not the youtube clip) is me drooling. They are too expensive to really consider, but that doesn’t matter. I’m still drooling. Literally.
Hopefully we’ll have some good review videos soon. I want to hear more.

Dug out my $10 yard sale Ampeg B25 I got back in 04/05 out of mothballs...took it up to the Cider pub for a jam last night. Has a nice grunt, and isn't insanely loud when opened up a bit. Needs some electronic restoration but that won't be a problem. Nice to get it back in use! Brought my trusty 90's Mexican Fender Jazz Bass with Quarter Pound pickups in it...my main go-to thunderstick... 🙂 #music #Musik #Fender #Ampeg #TubeAmp #Röhrenverstärker
