In the beginning, there was #TTY and serial ports, and verily did #sysadmins have text-based console access to fix a server falling over. And it was good. Not efficient, and scaled poorly, but for the 80s, it was good.
Then came addon boards and it was…ok. Then upon the world did come Baseboard Management Controller (#BMC), a dedicated, soldered on chip that changed server management from manual, physical troubleshooting to automated, isolated remote control. And it seemed pretty good.
And then pen testers and red teams started reporting flaws and vulnerabilities. For decades. Have those flaws been fixed in all those years?
No, don’t be ridiculous. Where’s the ROI for the MBA?
That said, if your bmc is exposed to the internet, you probably have way bigger #infosec issues.

Hey all,
I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who can point me in the eight direction.
I have a VT320 terminal I want to use, but am lacking the MMJ cable -- this is quite common.
I'm not in a position to create one myself, and even then, likely won't be able to connect to a computer without a USB to serial converter anyway.
I'm curious if there's anyone in the UK/Europe who makes these cables, in which case I'm happy to pay for that -- I just don't want to try making this myself, as I don't have the time.
Any help much appreciated.

ttydal 1.6.0 is out with some awesome new feature 🫡
For your eyes you can now see all tracks or albums art in big format either via the "o"shortcut or directly via the track art that is playing.
Now ttydal is also capable of detecting if any network issues occur, inform you if so and try to reconnect for a certain time.
Check the release here : https://github.com/results-may-vary-org/ttydal/releases

Am I the only one who just prefers to use whatever the default provided terminal application that comes with a window manager / distro?
There are so many niche tty's that I have yet to find a compelling reason to use. Even though like 50-60% of my workflow is in terminal.

Two tremendous dystopian whodunnit films
Two recently released dystopian thrillers are outstanding movies and both are available via streaming services.
Mercy (2026)
Source: imdb.comReleased earlier this year, Mercy is a tremendously interesting and entertaining science fiction movie — despite what the critics may say. In fact, the reviews and ratings by viewers of the film are much, much higher than those of the critics.
Rebecca Ferguson and Chris Pratt are tremendous in their respective roles – Ms. Ferguson as the AI generated Judge Maddox of the Mercy Capital Court and Mr. Pratt as a police officer accused of murder. He has exactly 90 minutes to prove his innocence sufficiently to AI Judge Maddox (a threshold below 92 percent likelihood of guilt) or be summarily executed.
Mr. Pratt must prove his innocence while his arms and legs are locked into the execution chair by employing all sorts of evidence gathering techniques that access the court’s ties to the municipal cloud. All technological devices within the city (LA) must be registered to the municipal cloud so defendants can access them. This includes surveillance cameras, live action feeds, cell phones, databases, and other technologies available. He can do this by use of a small hand screen or through voice requests to the cloud and/or AI Judge Maddox.
You will definitely be on the edge of your set while watching Mercy!
Relay (2025)
Released to theaters in 2025, Relay is thoroughly entertaining movie and unique in its story/use of an older technology as the conduit to protect whistleblowers who are being tormented by those entities they called out or implicated.
Relay stars Lily James and Riz Ahmed, who both excel in this film. Lily James plays a whistleblower who is being harassed by powerful corporation that she has dirt on. Meanwhile, Mr. Ahmed play the fixer who uses old-fashion TTY (teletypewriter) relay service to communicate with his clients (the whistleblowers) and to those who are harassing them.
TTY machine – Source: ultratec.comThis movie fan does not recall seeing TTY employed in a movie before and certainly never in such a central role of the plot. Mr. Ahmed’s use of old-fashioned TTY technology makes his communications virtually untraceable. That premise alone makes Relay highly engaging, truly groundbreaking, and a definite must see!
Hope you enjoy both films too. Peace!

Did you know that mpv can play videos from the TTY? Using the caca (yes) Video output, it shows the video from ASCII characters! 😍
There are better options like tct, but I do love the look here!

Ran into this problem yesterday. Was might confused as to why the USB-TTY was not showing up.

#Linux

I only just learned you can use the mouse in the TTY! (The Linux text-only console you get to by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, F2, etc.)
Some applications that enable this are gpm and consolation.
consolationworked better for me, especially when intmux; however, I still can't get scrolling with middle button and trackpoint to work, which is what would be the most useful for me. I don't know if it has to do withconsolation, tmuxmouse bindings, my particular ThinkPad model, etc. I can't find anything online about this, so if you've also dabbled in this, please share your experience! -
I spent some time playing with #tty last night and I realized what I did wrong last time when I tried to talk to a tty. The response does not have to arrive in one read call.
I also ran into 7bit vs 8 bit encoding difference that my parser did not handle.
What bugs me the most is lack of sensible single place that documents all of the protocols involved. There's a range of odd websites, man pages, PDFs and websites but nothing cohesive.
Please tell me I'm missing a well-know resource.
