Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas over the Dolomites

Explanation:
Comet #tsuchinshan_atlas is now headed back to the outer Solar System. The massive dusty snowball put on quite a show during its trip near the Sun, resulting in many impressive pictures from planet Earth during October. The featured image was taken in mid-October and shows a defining visual feature of the comet -- its impressive anti-tail. The image captures Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) with impressively long dust and ion tails pointing up and away from the Sun, while the strong anti-tail -- composed of more massive dust particles -- trails the comet and points down and (nearly) toward the recently-set Sun. In the foreground is village of Tai di Cadore, Italy, with the tremendous Dolomite Mountains in the background. Another comet, C/2024 S1 (ATLAS), once a candidate to rival Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas in brightness, broke up last week during its close approach to our Sun.

A last peek at #comet #Tsuchinshan_Atlas last Tuesday. Looks like the nose of a smiley face positioned between Beta and Gamma Ophiuchi.
Then, after editing, I remembered something about the constellation. It took a while to find, but if you follow the comet's tail towards 66 Oph you find ... Barnard's Star! Wave hello to a speed running elder and our closest neighbour in interstellar space (visible in the Northern hemisphere)! :)

Yesterday was the first cloudless night after TEN overcast ones. So I finally got that dirty little snowball...
It's a quick and dirty stacking with little further optimising, professional astrophotographers will probably scratch their eyes out seeing this. But I'm really happy with what came out considering conditions and equipment.

On Friday evening, the weather conditions looked good, so I grabbed my Canon EOS80D and tripod and headed for a spot with 360⁰ views! At 7h30pm the comet was barely visible to the naked eye... With a magnitude of 3.8 and the full moon rising quickly, it was difficult to get a good image ... But I did manage to get a few nice images out of the Canon and also with my Pixel 8 pro! #comet #tsuchinshan_atlas #astronomy

ich war die letzten beiden Tage #tsuchinshan_atlas fotografieren. Mangels Reichweite habe ich mich mit dem nahen Umfeld begnügt. Einmal aus der Kleingarten Anlage am Dienstag und einmal aus dem Osten Richtung Schwerin mit dem Kometen oben drüber. Der Helle Vollmond im Rücken war sehr störend. Mir fehlte so ein bisschen die richtig Geile Idee mit was man den Kometen in Verbindung bringt. Bzw die Idee die ich hatte lies sich nicht umsetzen aufgrund der Gegebenheiten. #fotografie

Routine für den späten Nachmittag: #Stellarium öffnen, und nachschauen, wann und wo genau ich den Kometen auch heute wieder nicht sehen werde, weil es schon wieder zu wolkig ist.🕖🕗

Angeblich haben ihn Leute am Sonntag Abend in Wien mit freiem Auge gesehen, wie er kurz zwischen den Wolken durchgeschaut hat.

Zum Glück hab ich schon so viele Fotos gesehen.

I finally saw the #comet #tsuchinshan_atlas today. Conditions were far from perfect, and this is only a handheld photo. But at least it's visible. I couldn't see it with my own eyes, but my youngest son had better eyes. Very nice in binoculars.

Pohhhh. De komeet Tsuchinshan-Atlas scheert eem langs Stad en Ommeland. Dat is voor het eerst in 80.000 jaar en dondersmooi vastgelegd door Jesse Prins bij Slaperstil (bij die Chinees langs de Friesestraatweg voor Aduard) net buiten Groningen.

Ce soir, le ciel nous a encore fait un cadeau inestimable. La comète Tsuchinshan-ATLAS ou C/2023 A3 est apparue entre Vénus et Arcturus quelques instants après le coucher du soleil. Nous étions dans le Var, au Muy (près de #Fréjus ), pour immortaliser cet instant exceptionnel. Découverte au début 2023, elle va continuer son périple pendant plus de 80000 ans avant de revenir nous dire bonjour. Autant vous dire que j’aurais pas mal de cheveux blancs d’ici là.
