  1. The Unusual Tails of Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas
Image Credit & Copyright: Bray Falls

    Explanation:
What created an unusual dark streak in Comet #Tsuchinshan-Atlas's tail? Some images of the bright comet during mid-October not only caught its impressively long tail and its thin anti-tail, but a rather unexpected feature: a dark streak in the long tail. The reason for the dark streak is currently unclear and a topic of some debate. Possible reasons include a plume of dark dust, different parts of the bright tail being unusually superposed, and a shadow of a dense part of the coma on smaller dust particles. The streak is visible in the featured image taken on October 14 from Texas, USA. To help future analyses, if you have taken a good image of the comet that clearly shows this dark streak, please send it in to APOD. Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS has now faded considerably and is returning to the outer Solar System.

  3. Life's a bit shit at the moment as I've been in a car crash which was not our driver's fault and am living on painkillers and muscle relaxants.

But after weeks and months I am finally, FINALLY at the right #latitude, free of clouds, and free of mountains to see C/2023 A3 #Tsuchinshan-#ATLAS. And just as I have my binoculars in the right spot, not knowing it's the right spot yet, a #meteorite streaks through my field of view.

Probably the first and last time in my life I see a meteorite at 10x.

  6. Finally a good version of C/2023 A3 (#Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) ! Probably the last one, goodbye, I won't be there when you're back!

  8. Here's a tough one: Basically the same image of #Comet C/2023 A3 (#Tsuchinshan–#ATLAS), but one is a stack of 14 frames to reduce noise while the other is a single frame de-noised with Adobe's AI.

At first sight, the AI version appears to be superior, but if you look closely, it (a) has some weird artefacts and (b) shows less of the comet's tail.

I guess I just have to improve my (very rudimentary) stacking technique … and while I'm at it, probably use more frames for better results.

  9. Same circumstance, but im 30mm instead of 200mm. Ambient light by local farmers preparing fields for winter wheat.

  10. #Comet C/2023 A3 (#Tsuchinshan–#ATLAS), spotted a few minutes ago.

This is an #OOC (out-of-camera) JPEG from my eight year old Fujifilm X-T2 camera (though probably downsized and compressed by Mastodon's image uploader).

I will edit and stack some RAWs later - stay tuned!

  11. #Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is a #Comet that was discovered in January 2023 by the Tsuchinshan Observatory in China and the ATLAS observatory in South Africa.

It is one of the brightest comets seen in decades and was visible to the naked eye in the Northern Hemisphere.

  13. After too many cloudy nights, I finally got my chance to say hello - and goodbye - to #Comet C/2023 A3 (#Tsuchinshan–#ATLAS).

I took a few shots with my hobby camera equipment from our balcony in #Goettingen, Germany. The orange/purple mist in the images are thin cloud layers, illuminated by the last bits of sunlight after sunset.

  14. Yesterday was the first cloudless night after TEN overcast ones. So I finally got that dirty little snowball...
It's a quick and dirty stacking with little further optimising, professional astrophotographers will probably scratch their eyes out seeing this. But I'm really happy with what came out considering conditions and equipment.

  15. #Comet C/2023 A3 #Tsuchinshan-ATLAS descending over Kapiti Island, New Zealand on the evening of 22Oct2024.

  16. Tried again to catch the #comet and think I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse before it disappeared behind the clouds #tsuchinshan

  17. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS with Orionid meteors. Image stack of two. The sky really lit up for a few seconds! Peak Orionids is on Monday (October 21). Also tonight's sunset left a purple hue in the sky that I am very happy about :)

  18. The #comet #Tsuchinshan-#ATLAS tonight, above #Marseille.

Likely the last time I saw it with the naked eye!

Ciao nice little comet, thanks for visiting us and not impacting us #DontLookUp. Have a nice journey back …
