SANFORD, #Maine — "As protesters peacefully marched along the streets of #Sanford Saturday, they were met by an anti-protest group holding long guns.
"'It was to instill fear. It was a scare tactic,' said protester Shane Reisinger.
"The protesters also heard the group yelling racial slurs.
"'As we were chanting 'Black Lives Matter,' we were met with 'no they don't.' We were met with a gentleman who was riding around on a bicycle, who clearly was not in his right mind, screaming 'white power," said Reisinger."

A few years ago, I participated in a #BlackLivesMatter rally and march in one of the whitest towns in #Maine (really a city, but has that "small town feel"). Some of the locals hung out on their porches -- some of them holding guns. A couple of my friends asked why I was there -- instead of a rally in #PortlandMaine. "Because I needed to be an ally to folks who were standing up against #racism in a place where it might not be safe for them to do so. It's easy to be vocal when surrounded by fellow liberals. It's a lot harder when you're surrounded by rednecks with guns."

Just looked up the lyrics of that Jason Aldean song and even if I were to buy his line that there's nothing about race in it (like I'd never heard of a dog whistle, or something)... even so, the *most charitable* interpretation is still that small towns are full of gun-toting, hostile people, "looking for a fight" (Aldean's words!), itching to mete out vigilante "justice" for any provocation. Seriously, gross.
