  1. RE: mastodon.social/@RonSupportsYo

Here I explained and I gave an example of a truth sandwich, a technique that I learned from Jay Rosen, a professor and a Trump critic.

  3. You, @emptywheel.bsky.social, wrote to people: "When you RT Trump's bullshit posts with/no filter, you help to make them go viral, you WILLINGLY confirm that he is the arbiter of truth, and you also drown out news reports on his abuse."
The solution is a #TruthSandwich where you tell the truth, you repeat Trump's lie, and you say why his claim is a lie:
Todd Blanche is unfit to be Attorney General.
Trump says he would be great.
Todd acts as Trump's personal lawyer, making him unfit.

  7. “Security Has a Beef With Photography”

The Latina in the safety vest had a beef with me. The company had surveilled me on camera. “What are you doing here,” she asked, right in front of the Visitor Center. I replied that I was taking a pictures. She said, “No photos allowed. Delete them.”

I did not delete any photographs, instead I published one.

    EDIT / EN:
One of the easiest ways reacting to Fake News — The Truth Sandwich — is rarely used, which boggles the mind.
Headlines and first paragraphs are especially important, because the #TruthSandwich has to start there.

  13. Starting tomorrow, the #zone will be flooded with tremendous amounts of 💩, again, and the #media will fail to ignore it, again.

If you can't resist the urge to comment, remember #GeorgeLakoff's "#TruthSandwich":

    1. Always present the truth first, in context. No justifications, no defense, no questioning: Don't let step 2. spill over into this.

    2. Only then, briefly mention the piece of misinformation (bullshit), disinformation (lies), or malinformation (mangled context) that is making headlines. Use reported speech, and label the piece as incorrect, made up, or taken out of context.

    3. Close with another spoonful of truth.

Stop at 1., if you can manage to.

  14. @aaron.rupar

Please do not print a person's lies first in your posts/headlines/articles.

Putting the lies first gives them primacy. It makes the lies seem more like facts.

What you read first, feels more "real" than any debunking that follows. It's not logical, but that's how our brains work. So print the truth first, followed by the falsehoods.

Give the truth primacy, not the lies.

Always LEAD with the TRUTH, not the lies.

Why did you post the lie as the first thing to be read? It makes it sound like it is true.

Never post the lie first. Post the facts first, then show how the lie is a lie, then post the facts again.

  22. I'd like a truth sandwich, please.

Recently Jake Tapper read Trump’s statement reacting to a
fed jury’s $83 million dollar judgment for the E. Jean Carroll v Trump libel suit.

"He explained he would say what’s true prior to reading Trump’s statement, read Trump’s statement filled with falsehoods, and then follow up again with the truth. Like a good server in your favorite restaurant, he then served up the truth sandwich."

  26. In March 2016 (updated that Aug.), @georgelakoff wrote “Why #Trump.”

Lakoff used his expertise in cognitive and brain science to explain why Trump led the GOP pack. For example, see “how Trump uses your brain against you.”

Situated in Lakoff’s “Nurturant Parent family” (progressive) and “Strict Father family” (conservative) framing.

    First tip: use the #TruthSandwich ( @jayrosen_nyu)

Important since little has changed for the better.

I don't know what else to call it when I link to a site, and someone says "what site?" and I link to the post where I linked to a site, and they're like, "that's just a link to your post"

Anyway I'm sorry I couldn't keep him going longer. Someone else is going to have to distract him from bothering lefties now.

    Indeed.

How to refute a lie without simply amplifying the lie.

    Use a Truth Sandwich:
    -- First, tell the truth.
-- Then, point the lie and how it diverges from the truth.
-- Repeat the truth and explain the consequences of the difference between the truth and the lie.

  37. Since I started posting on Mastodon I've respected the convention against quote-boosts. But for a #TruthSandwich I feel I have to make an exception:

There is no such thing as full self-driving for cars. The name of the Tesla software is a lie.

That's exactly what @davidzipper is saying here, but it needs to be up front!

  39. There is no such thing as full self driving for cars. But this NPR story starts at 9:33 and it's not until 12:08, after repeating the phrase "Full Self Driving" ELEVEN times as the name of a Tesla program, that reporter Camilla Domonoske lets user know the name is misleading, and a human is supposed to be actively monitoring the car at all times to make sure it doesn't hurt anyone.

We need to do better: a #TruthSandwich and an abbreviation. @georgelakoff
