  1. ## Dismissive of Real World Pain and Progressive Social Policies: Our Parliamentarians.

What is it about #Politics that it attracts the most bigoted, avid and hypocritical people — because that’s what is on show. Even when an idealist, elected for their idealism, joins the fray they are sure to be bullied into the required behavioural mould.

Living the life in *Cloud LaLaLand*, their feet rarely touch the ground. Our Janus-faced polies wind and wound their way around political issues without batting an eyelid while walking the fence between the #Oligarchy and the #Electorate. That is… more aptly, they tread the path on the ##Monied and #Rentier side of the fence and occasionally will throw some crumbs over to those on the other side. Those whom they ought to represent in Parliament, those whom they are *duty-bound* to prioritize in their decision-making.

There are no exceptions here, only a matter of *degree*. The question is: how do we recall those ethically inept politicians back to their sworn democratic duty? We can vote them out, but whom do we replace them with? **More of the same**? The *two party duopoly* needs to be broken up by as many cliques and groups (not to say Party again) that can fit in the *House*, let them bargain and accommodate to form a govt. The democratic process will be the richer for it and Parliament likely have more care for the better good of our society. A more diverse Parliament in terms of representation would merely reflect the diverstiy found in our society. Now to *inform* and *educate* the electorate…

  2. The less said, on this platform (because most of us don’t need reminding) about #PaulineHanson the better. Unless of course it is in the course of throwing some more ridicule on the ridiculest: towit #AnnabelCrabb — who suddenly begins to be awake to it —and her critique of #PHON call to #monoculture:

“Pauline Hanson herself, meanwhile, popped back into the chat regularly over the week to offer helpful definitional prompts including that Japan is a monoculture.

Now, this in itself should have been a clue that it was well past time for everybody to go home for a lie down.

Because if there's anything more hallucination-inducing than the woman who 30 years ago had her undies in a bunch about too many Asians suddenly fancying we should be a bit more like Japan, I don't care to imagine it.

And yet. And yet. Unbelievably, there were still players willing to trudge out and engage, seriously, with the question of whether we should be Japan.”

Thanks for the merriment Annabel, may all your future pieces and vids carry the same clarity of political nous. And for all those polies still wondering what monoculture is, I’ll give you all a clue… it’s about #Cults … sit with that for a while.

  3. Amy, again, dumbing it down for all of us (as she has to do when faced with our politcal amnesia) and reminds us that:

‘Because that’s the thing – the people who deliberately muddy the waters through misinformation, cherry-picking facts or straight-up falsehoods then brag about their success, admitting they knew it was wrong, but hey, “that’s politics”.

They can do it time and time again, because every time they change the lie, it’s treated as a serious input into the debate.’

I sat there as I read those words and couldn’t come up with a logical and rational reason why her statement was true. Not just a one-off in this case #BarnabyJoice or for a number of times polies and journalists have conspired (willingly or not) to ‘cut and splice’ and play an #untruth ad nauseam. Bannon (the famous US conspirator) is reported as saying that if you throw enough shit around some of it is bound to stick, or something along those lines. It sure is starting to smell bad around here.

  4. @MsDropbear42
All of which makes a stronger case for legislated truth in political advertising with some teeth in it. There should also be a mechanism to prevent candidates from telling whopper during campaigns, some kind of legal consequences, It’s not a silver bullet,, but it’s a start.

  5. Instead of trying to dissect what went wrong with the Yes campaign, journalists should take a deep dive into the disinformation, fear mongering and blatant lies peddled by the No camp.

  6. Media regulator Aus Communications and Media Authority (#ACMA) will gain new powers to:
    📑 impose a compulsory code of conduct against misinformation on digital platforms;
🔎gather info to assess how platforms respond to misinformation & disinformation

These powers will not apply to professional news & authorised electoral content. Therefore, this change will not solve many of the issues raised by Zali Steggall in her #TruthInPoliticalAdvertising bill
