  6. If you don't have Hashilthsa in your regular list of news sites to paruse, you should. It's the oldest indigenous-led news source in Canada.

Here's another great article, this one about yesterday’s march to mark #truthandreconciliationday. Tseshaht and Hupacasath and other Nuuchanulth nations have been doing these walks in #PortAlberni since 2017.

So many people have been deeply affected by the former Alberni Indian Residential School which closed in 1973.

Port Alberni was at the forefront of bringing people involved in residential schools to justice as well:

"In his 1995 sentencing of a former Alberni dormitory supervisor, Justice Douglas Hogarth called the residential school system “nothing less than a form of institutionalized pedophilia.””

  17. Hi, and welcome to "Why I Don't Celebrate Canada Day Anymore" Day, also known as Truth and Reconciliation Day on this shamefully non-statutory holiday.

We did this. Living Canadians did this to Indigenous peoples of so many First Nations. In my adult lifetime.

Follow the hashtag #TruthAndReconciliationDay to hear Fediverse stories of people who lost their heritage, either to the Residential "Schools" or to the fear of them. Become aware of the cultural genocide we've committed, on top of the physical one.

I've ceded the Canadian flag to the convoy bigots. It can represent them, because to me it's going to always be dirty with the stains of what we did. I don't feel it represents the best of me anymore.

ETA: When I say "within my adult lifetime", I mean this: I was 30, and already transitioned, when the last Residential "School" closed.

  18. My dad intentionally did not get me status. He hid from me that we are Mi’kmaq until about fifteen years ago when I found out his sister is Mi’kmaw. He was trying to save me from what had happened to him and his siblings, and you know, maybe he did. Because I was never taken away and incarcerated in one of those loathsome residential “schools”. The last residential school closed three years after I graduated university. He only opened up to me about his mom being Mi’kmaw a year ago. I know almost nothing about Mi’kmaq culture. The very little I do know comes from a Mi’kmaw elder who prepared me to go through a week of ceremony shortly after the lockdowns. Please consider donating to the Indian Residential School Survivors’ Society. You could also look through the #IndigenousMutualAid tag and find folks who can really use your help. #ResidentialSchool #genocide #Indigedon #OrangeShirtDay #IndigenousMastodon #TruthAndReconciliationDay irsss.ca
