  1. Lies. Money. Racism. Distorted religion. All of the worst that we see in today’s Trump regime was present in spades in Nashville in 1920. But the suffragists didn’t give up.

  2. August 18, 1920 - Women throughout the U.S. won the right to vote when the Tennessee legislature approved the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution (the last of 36 states then required to approve it). An amendment for universal suffrage was first introduced in Congress in 1878, and Wyoming had granted suffrage in state law by 1890.

This amendment to enfranchise all American women had been introduced annually for 41 years without passage; it had gotten two-thirds of both houses of Congress to approve it just the year before.

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

In the Tennessee House, 24-year-old Representative Harry Burn surprised observers by casting the deciding vote for ratification. At the time of his vote, Burns had in his pocket a letter he had received from his mother urging him, "Don't forget to be a good boy" and "vote for suffrage."

Hear Hear‼️ FWIW, those 51 votes for making Roe the law of the land would represent about two thirds of the population. Then let the no-voting Senators explain to their constituents why they don’t trust women to make their own health choices.

I like this insight, trying to put these individual issues into a more organized picture. I think Journalism needs to do more of this. Too much we cover each action and indignity as if it were some surprise, isolated, modular incident that is unrelated to all others. In doing so, we don't get the big picture. There is a LOT of that going on these days.

This work also resonates with an essay I wrote in 2012, "Language Defines Our Lives". It had gone offline when Salon magazine's Open Salon forum was retired, but it's available via the magic of the Internet Archive. I think you'll find it interesting and relevant.
