#LandBack: #Mikmaq Nation Acquires More Than 80 Acres

"The Mi'kmaq Nation has added 83 acres to its land base on its northernmost reservation in Maine. The land is adjacent to a community center and tribal housing where 48 residents live.

"According to a press release, the parcel's former owner offered to sell the land to the Nation before listing it for sale. The Tribe partnered with land conservation nonprofit #TrustForPublicLand. #TPL raised the required funds to meet the landowner's acquisition timeline so the land could be transferred to Mi'kmaq Nation as soon as possible.

"The acquisition — called #Pugweliget , or 'living together in a group' — is the Nation's second this year. In June, it obtained the title to 3,400 acres in Aroostook County, Maine, doubling its land holdings.

"While the latest acquisition immediately benefits the residents of the housing center, Shannon Hill, Environmental Health Director for the Mi'kmaq Nation, said all tribal members will have access to land for foraging, hunting, fishing, and cultural practices.

"The Mi'kmaq Nation is honored to have been entrusted with another land return this year. Although this property has much fewer acres than the 3,400-acre land return earlier this summer, each land return is unique and meaningful in its own way," Hill said in a press release. "The ability to take a walk and connect with the land as we did thousands of years ago without fear of trespassing is of far greater importance here than the number of acres."

Pugweliget is the latest milestone in an effort dubbed the Tributary Land Returns, a collaboration between the five federally recognized Wabanaki Tribes and seven non-native organizations, to return over 50,000 acres to Wabanaki communities across 11 different projects. Once completed, the TLR will be the largest return of private lands in U.S. history. Seven of the projects have been completed since 2019."

"The home city of one of the busiest airports in the world just got a significant environmental upgrade.

"For decades, major portions of the 18,000-acre Chattahoochee Riverlands in Atlanta were largely inaccessible or closed due to hazardous conditions and water pollution from decades of sewage and sludge.

"Now, thanks to a new investment from the #TrustForPublicLand (#TPL), over 100 miles of trails, parks, and eight new campsites will be available to the public. Spanning as far north as #BufordDam and as far south as #ChattachoocheeBend State Park in Coweta County, the Chattahoochee Riverlands will provide unique river access and outdoor adventures for residents of the sprawling Atlanta metropolitan area over the course of the next decade.

"TPL’s goal is to expand and revitalize the area, connecting the #MetroAtlanta Region to the river and providing new outdoor access for one million people. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 1, 2025 civic leaders and TPL opened New Riverlands Park, one of two new points of entry to the area. The other, #CampbelltonPark, has an expanded, #ADAAccessible campsite, and TPL is working with the city to add an additional 70 acres, according to Saporta Report.

" 'Stretching across 19 cities and seven counties, this network of trails will bring people to the water’s edge, spark a lifelong love of the river, and reveal the magic of the #ChattahoocheeRiver to all,' said the team at TPL in a statement announcing the transfer of 14 acres of riverfront property in Sandy Springs to the National Park Service, effectively expanding the overall acreage of the Chattahoochee Riverlands.

"An updated interactive website can help visitors understand the variety of parks, hiking trails, and local dining options along the river, in addition to the many activity options for outdoor enthusiasts like running, cycling, camping, or even just a leisurely stroll through the riverside trails.

"The area was previously a dumping ground for wastewater and polluted stormwater, according to a report from Atlanta Magazine, making it unsuitable for recreational use. Now, thanks to upgrades from TPL and grassroots efforts from local advocacy group #ChattahoocheeNow, the water is cleaner and open to additional recreational uses. Still, TPL recommends visiting the #BacteriAlert website before swimming or wading in the water.

"This isn’t the only environmental upgrade project TPL is working on. In May, the organization announced an extension to the Empire State Trail, which currently spans from the southernmost point of #NewYorkCity's #BatteryPark, to the Canadian border in northern upstate #NewYork. The extension will push the trail east and connect it to the #LongIslandGreenway, a 200-mile trail that will eventually connect the #EmpireStateTrail to #Montauk."

"This is a lovely 81-acre preserve by the Saco River, with great #WalkingTrails. All together, there are about 3 miles of trails here, as well as some #swimming spots. There is a promontory with a great vista of the Saco River and a little picnic table. This preserve seems to be less trammeled than its neighbor across the river — #PleasantPointPark — and also somewhat popular with #MountainBikers. The perimeter trail, which is about 1.6 miles or so, is very well blazed. The interior trails are less well marked and seemingly less used.

"There is also more information about the site at the #TrustForPublicLand.

"Directions: If you’re coming from #Route202 east, you will turn left after crossing the bridge over the Saco River from Buxton. Take a left onto Old Alfred Road, and the parking lot is immediately on your left. You’ll see a sign for the preserve, and some stone steps."
