The EU's foreign policy chief condemned Israel's decision to outlaw the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (#UNRWA), calling it "nonsense" that targets regional stability and the human dignity of those benefiting from UNRWA's work.

The creation of UNRWA followed the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which broke out after the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 181(II), which proposed the partition of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. The war created a refugee crisis, which can be attributed to the "ethnic cleansing of Palestine," during which the new State of Israel intentionally displaced Palestinians to create a Jewish demographic majority.
Historical records show that the US was consistently one of the largest donors to UNRWA in its early years, and clearly until recently. Some researchers believe this was part of an effort to prevent the Soviet Union from exploiting the refugee crisis. Ie #TrumanDoctrine
