NATO will stand with or without the US. Canada will and must lead. We have punched above our weight in every war started by others, and now is no different. We help keep the peace, and we do it well, without bloviating, bragging, or playing toy soldiers. We don’t want war, just as we don’t want winter, but when winter or war comes to us or our allies, we do what must be done. Quietly, bravely, effectively, not looking for bragging rights. Just looking for peace, order, and good government, so we and our allies can get on with the timeless human pursuit of community, friendship, and thriving.

Canada was a poor nation with a small population. But from the get-go, Canadians stepped up and did our part. And in the darkest days of the Second World War, Winston Churchill praised Canada as the linchpin of the democratic resistance.

80 plus years later, democracy is again facing serious threat, and Canada is being tested. A year ago, there were many who thought we would bend or buckle, but we have stood our ground.

Canadians are playing a key role with democratic allies. We are fighting for a just peace in Ukraine. And we are standing up to the fascist threat posed by gangsters who reject democracy and use violence to impose their will.

2026 will be hard and chaotic, but Canadians know what is at stake. We can be counted on once again.”

I hope those who need shelter, or food, or safety, or kindness find it tonight, and tomorrow, and the next day, everywhere.

The only way out of this mess is if we all want that for each other, no matter where we are from, what language we speak, or why we are in the circumstance we are in.

Happy Canada Day on Tuesday to everyone who wants democracy, freedom to protest, public broadcasting, free medical care for all, and the separation of church and state.

We’re not perfect in Canada. Far from it. But generally, we know it and we talk about it. And so far, we keep working on it, together, over time.

🍁Canada celebrates 60 years of flying the Maple Leaf today.

We have a flag, like most of our neighbours. We’re not nationalists by habit, but today we hung it from our front porch to give courage to all the people fighting against bullies and fascists.

But we also have a Canadian flag paddle. Hand-painted in BC and hanging in our window in Nova Scotia.

May Canada always have a paddle when canoeing up the turbulent waters of North American diplomacy.

Grow vegetables.
Draw a picture.
Sing.
Play an instrument.

And do all of the above with others. In person, at a community garden or centre, online, in a video call. Show each other your vegetable seedlings, your sketches, your photographs. Celebrate the human experience of bringing something into the world that has not existed before, yourself, in your own way. Not owned by a corporation and consumed because of FOMO. Not to be judged, bought and sold, and thrown away when it is no longer fashionable according to self-proclaimed “influencers.” Not for approval and social capital, but as a reminder to yourself and others that the act of creation is THE reason to live.

Create simply because it’s fun. Emerging, gently, honestly, happily, and tentatively from your own hands and spirit.

Because creation is the opposite of destruction. Those who wish to destroy our will to resist are delighted when we just stop trying to create for our own pleasure. They know that if we stop caring about the reason democracy exists - freedom to create, freedom to choose, freedom to act - then they have won.

If we are to resist, we must remind ourselves WHY. Every day. Over and over. And show others we are creating without fear, so they can have courage to create, too.

Science, medicine, art, literature, community programs, social services - those all exist in order to sustain our freedom to create. To learn. To grow and thrive.

So today, go plant a seed. Make a picture. Sing a song in the shower.

Kick at the darkness til it bleeds daylight.
