Walled Culture the book (digital versions available free) is about the incompatibility of the traditional copyright system with the digital world, and its failure to reward creators fairly. That raises the question of what might replace it, and the book’s last chapter offers one solution in the form of true fans. These are people who love an artist’s work and are happy to support it […]

Wikipedia celebrated its 25th birthday this month. Given the centrality of Wikipedia to so much activity online, it is hard to remember (or to imagine, for those who are younger) a time without Wikipedia. The latest statistics are impressive:

Wikipedia is viewed nearly 15 billion times every month.

Wikipedia contains over 65 million articles across more than 300 languages.

Wikipedia is […]

Walled Culture the book, three years on

Walled Culture the book (free digital versions available) was launched just over three years ago. A few weeks afterwards, I talked with journalist and editor Maria Bustillos about the book and its background, as part of the Internet Archive’s Book Talk series. That interview has just been added to the Future Knowledge Podcast series in a shortened form, so this seems like a good moment to […]

How GenAI is taking true fans activity – and creativity – to the next level

Walled Culture has written a number of times about the true fans approach – the idea that creators can be supported directly and effectively by the people who love their work. As Walled Culture the book explains (available as a free ebook), one of the earliest and best expositions of the concept came from Kevin Kelly, former Executive Editor at Wired magazine, in an essay he wrote originally […]

Fans of open access, unite: you have nothing to lose but your chained libraries

When books were rare and extremely expensive, they were often chained to the bookcase to prevent people walking off with them, in what were known as “chained libraries”. Copyright serves a similar purpose today, even though, thanks to the miracle of perfect, zero-cost digital copies, it is possible simultaneously to take an ebook home and yet leave the original behind. For a quarter of a […]

True fans, super fans, core fans: an alternative way to fund creators gains wide industry support

Walled Culture the book (free digital versions available) concluded with a look at “true fans”, an alternative way of funding creators that avoids the main problems of the current copyright system. The approach is based on nurturing the connection between artists and their most dedicated fans, allowing the former to generate extra revenue by providing the latter with tailored offers. When […]

Another small update to TrueFans. On every podcast page there is an info icon. This opens a popup that shows the metadata of that podcast i.e date create, number of followers, who hosts the podcast etc.

We also have a chart showing the length of the last 10 episodes. We have now added your personal listening time as a chart for each episode.

If you hover over a bar chart it will tell you all the specific details for each episode. i.e Listen Time, Percent Completed and Value Paid.

[I don’t know whether I’ll write about each day of Fediforum individually… and I expect to be posting less regularly for a week or so, due to other things going on…]

Today was the first day of the fourth edition of #Fediforum – an unconference that brings together folks who are building, using, advocating, and learning about the Fediverse and the platforms that it comprises.

I went to the first Fediforum back in March 2023; I missed the second one last autumn due to travel; attended the last one this March; and so, this is my third one overall. It has proven to be a great event for catching up with what is going on, what people are building, sharing ideas, and finding new collaborators. It is growing each time, which is excellent to see.

Fediforum is three half-day sessions (previously it has been two half-days; this time they added a Saturday to enable folks who may have found the weekdays less easy, to join in as well). It is not the most convenient time from a European perspective, but also not impossible to get involved – 4pm to 9pm UK time across three days is OK if I’m able to plan and prepare for them. It is an unconference format. Each day starts with a series of 5 minute demos of working code and apps – if folks want to dive deeper onto one of those demos, then the presenters are encouraged to create a session for them during the day. Then there is a chunk of time to collaboratively create the agenda for the day in a Google doc – the day is split into three, hour long sessions, across up to 8 virtual rooms. Each session has an audio/video element, and a collaborative etherpad shared doc for taking notes. At the end of the day, we come back together and summarise the key things from the main sessions.

Here’s a quick summary of interesting things from today:

• Right before things kicked off, the Mastodon team announced a new project to explore building a new shared service for the Fediverse – the concept of Fediverse Discovery Providers. I’ll probably talk about this tomorrow, if I can find a slot to schedule a session on it.

We are excited to launch a new project that will help small and medium-sized fediverse servers and their users have better access to search and discovery through the use of pluggable Fediverse Discovery Providers, supported by a grant from @EC_NGI. See our new dedicated website for details:

https://fediscovery.org/

— Mastodon Engineering (@MastodonEngineering) 2024-09-12T14:29:56.317Z

• I enjoyed the demos today! We heard from Fedica (a scheduling and cross-platform social media management tool from my old friend Samir and his team); IFTAS, about their new content classification service; the very interesting TrueFans.fm podcasting service; the Lemmy client app Quiblr; and an update from the Threads team.
  • I really need to migrate a podcast between hosts, at the moment it is a WordPress site with over 10 years of content, and I’m now torn between Castopod and TrueFans (among other options)… a good problem to have, I guess!

TIL Quiblr, a Lemmy client https://github.com/Technicolor-Dreamcoat/Quiblr #fediverse #fediforum

— Andy Piper (@andypiper@macaw.social) 2024-09-12T15:41:12.506Z

Threads team just announced and launched the ability to send Threads users a link that opens the Fedi sharing options at #Fediforum – so that should make it quicker if you're asking a user over there to share to the rest of us!

— Andy Piper (@andypiper@macaw.social) 2024-09-12T15:42:16.649Z

• a group of us had an excellent conversation around creatives and artists and how we can build better platforms to support them in the Fediverse. It was cool to talk about several things that are happening in this space particularly around music (see Bandwagon, RadioFreeFedi, IndieBeat, etc).

Hey #music lovers: The Indie Beat FM is launching tonight, streaming tracks from the Fediverse by indie artists.

Music hosted by our friends at Bandwagon.fm, a place you should check out if you make and/or love music.

https://live.theindiebeat.fm/

#radio

— MizKirsten (@mizkirsten) 2024-09-11T22:55:03.067Z

• we discussed the LOLA (Live OnLine Account) portability proposal from the W3C SWICG, which could enable data portability between ActivityPub instances.
• there was an interesting session on academics on the Fediverse, which included a reference to this excellent list of instances and folks.

Too many sessions for me to easily choose between them, and I’m looking forward to flipping through the notes from the others! It was really, really good to talk to folks both in the sessions and in the side channel chats, and it is great to see people who are building and using the platforms coming together and sharing their thoughts.

I joked in the chat at the start of the afternoon (my time) that another 6 months have flown past in the Fediverse – and it is so true! There is so much happening – an exciting time to be learning and helping to shape the platforms that are emerging.

We will show more tomorrow. We are adding search and filters next.

Next week we will enable followers to add likes and replies back to the creator which will then appear back in TrueFans.fm #TrueFans #Podcasting #BuildingInPublic.

Hello fediverse!

I need your help to feature all of the amazing services that are part of the #ActivityPub realm.

What are some of your favorite ActivityPub handles to follow on #Funkwhale, #Peertube, #Pixelfed, #Bookwyrm, #Wordpress, #Truefans, #Castopod, #Akkoma, #Friendica, #Lemmy and others?

Your replies will be categorized by @jejord, @AileenLalor, @miaq and @marci so that we can feature these accounts to our Flipboard users and work to ensure they render properly on Flipboard.

I'm excited to help evangelize the many great projects here and advocate for their adoption and funding.
