Pumpkin's Tower, Trowbridge, Wilts
A medieval-style round tower, emerging from the tiled roof of a building erected in 2000 AD. Think of it like a middle finger, raised to the local Planning Department, who foiled several wacky plans by one Thomas Rothschild, a local businessman. The tower is named after Mr. Rothschild's daughter.

Interesting #Trowbridge Fact!

Ushers of Trowbridge was #Wiltshire’s oldest #brewery, opening in 1824 and closing down in 2000.

The #DPRK government wanted a #beer brewery, so it bought the plant, shipped it to Pyongyang, and since 2002 it has been the core of the state Taedonggang brewery.

There was also a concern that it might be used to make chemical weapons…

An ancient tower, built as long ago as 2000AD, by Thomas Rothschild, a local businessman - as a sort of middle-finger salute to the local planning office, that has thwarted some of Tom's schemes. The tower is named after his daughter.

Hotel Bythesea, Trowbridge.
A bit strange, since Trowbridge is a good 30 miles from the nearest briny.
The Hotel takes its name from Bythesea Road, on which it stands. The road takes its name from Henry Bythesea, who built a housing development here, at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Since I first visited, some 30-odd years ago, the building has been renamed; Bythesea Lodge.

Yesterday I spent some time at Trowbridge Museum in Wiltshire beginning to plan some visual poetry workshops for young people which I’m going to be running next year using an extensive herbarium collected by poet and botanist George Crabbe who was Rector of St James’ Church (where he’s buried) until 1832.
