  7. #NintendoSwitch Review Video: #Tropicalia - While its style, story, setting, and general feel help it to stand out, its oddities in terms of play keep it from holding up against the competition #IndieGames

  8. How could I have only realized the power of Brazilian music now?

From 1964 to 1985, Brazil endured a military dictatorship. Many people resisted, including artists.

Even before that dark period, Bossa Nova had already shown that beauty could emerge from sadness in a country marked by deep inequality. With melodies that carried both elegance and melancholy, artists like Tom Jobim, Vinícius de Moraes, and Nara Leão gave voice to that generation.

Then came Tropicália, a bold artistic movement that defied censorship and challenged conformity. Through experimentation and irony, artists such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Chico Buarque, Maria Bethânia, Rita Lee, and Elis Regina transformed resistance into song.

These artists proved that creativity can thrive even when freedom is limited, and sometimes, that’s when it shines the brightest.

  9. Seriously, what is the “in joke” about Caetano Veloso naming several of his LPs "Caetano Veloso” ?

  10. The rabbit holes that I love to follow are often started by someone -a friend, a random post- suggesting something new. Or familiar. This is both.
    Enjoy!

ps. This rabbit hole started when someone posted a video of Bonnie Rait and Richard Cantrememberhisname… this song has nothing to do with that song.

  11. I saw "I'm Still Here" the other day so I might have to spend my day off tomorrow listening to my compilations of Brazilian music, starting with Soul Jazz's Tropicalia.

  12. Join me in celebrating the arrival of so many new friends from #brazil by listening to my favorite avant-garde, anarchist fusion of Brazilian and African genres album

  13. This morning's #workout #music is from Sessa doing #BossaNova #Tropicalia #DreamPop

At this point it seems this style should be remaned Bossa velho since the "new trend" is 70 years old at this point.

  14. Manduka - Manduka
    #vinyl @vinylrecords #Brasil #Tropicalia #folk #NowPlaying #CrateDigging

Vibes from the other side of the globe. His debut, recorded while in exile in Chile. Found this OG copy cheap on the way to the train today.

  15. In the wake of our #djwar tomorrow @ Takapiha, #Turku (starting 20 o'clock), here's the last one:

    mixcloud.com/komitea/sad-vicio

No tracklist, sorry. We were just too lazy. Anyway, it's ~4 hours of #afrobeat, #afrofunk, #bossanova, #tropicália, #habibifunk and that kind of #music.

  16. It would be hard to overstate the impact Os Mutantes, and in particular Rita Lee, had on pop music. That they formed during a brutal military dictatorship in Brazil makes it even more improbable. Here is a 1968 performance of Os Mutantes in front of an audience losing their fucking minds.

  17. RIP Rita Lee youtube.com/watch?v=gfs9DC4GNr unfortunately the clip of Os Mutantes wandering around Disneyland in the mid-60s seems to have been taken down from youtube :(

  18. Marconi Notaro - "No Sub Reino Dos Metazoarios" ("In The Sub Kingdom of the Metazoans") (1973)
    #NowPlaying #MarconiNotaro #LulaCortes #Ramalho #vinyl #vinylrecords #BrazilianMusic @vinylrecords

    youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK

Brazilian acoustic folk + #Tropicalia + fuzzed out #garagerock + #psych + trance ragas. Features the great Lula Cortes (who also contributed to the cover art). Notaro plays a "tricordio" that he made, which sounds something like a cross between a #sitar and a #dulcimer

  19. hi all, it's 6 am in Spain.

Currently listening to #WFMU (and I see they're not on Mastodon yet). It's one of the few US-based stations that is playing #GalCosta on a FEW different shows the week after her death. She was a giant, but outside of circles of people who are passionate about #Brazilian music, she's not well known.

And I also see that the fediverse has a tag for Gal Costa, used recently, which warms my heart.
