The ‘Moonlight Groover’ compilation of late 1960s rocksteady has been a terminal favorite of mine since discovering a worn out copy of it in the WPRB stacks many years ago. Originally released by Trojan Records in 1970, it gathers some of the most soulful Jamaican sounds from the powerhouse Tommy McCook/Duke Reid orbit.
1966-68 was an incredibly prolific time in Jamaican music, and there are a zillion quality comps chronicling that era. (I still recall the gravity of buying the expansive Trojan Rocksteady CD box set at NYC’s Other Music in the late 90s but that’s probably also because it was way beyond my usual budget.)
Moonlight Groover, while by no means complete, is a perfect snaphot of the genre in capsule form. I’d given up hope of ever finding a copy, but I just recently learned it was reissued in 2020 and I’m thrilled to have it soundtracking this morning’s coffee-making rituals. Stumbling around the kitchen at 7 AM rarely feels as joyous as it does right now. Love the photo and typesetting on the cover art, too!
