  6. Thanks to the magic of #macro, I don't even know which of my balcony weeds* this is, and from which pot. But who cares, right?
After several months with a macro lens I already found one of my favourite subjects: plant 'hairs', apparently called #trichomes.

    * technically they aren't weeds because I haven't intentionally planted anything in said pots, but it's shorter to type than 'wild-growing grasses I never sowed but they still keep growing every year'.

  7. That’s Why This Hairy Flower is a Trap botany.one/2025/04/thats-why-t @botanyone paper: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wile

"The flowers of #Aristolochia are pollinated by #flies attracted by the smell of decaying flesh they produce. As they advance in the pipe-like structure of these #flowers, flies cannot fly back outside, forcing them to keep advancing until they reach the chamber with pollen... A new study investigates how specialised hairs called trapping #trichomes ensure #pollination in A. esperanzae"

  8. @whknott #Trichomes I haven't had any luck with the magnifying glass because of my disability.

  9. Hairy bromeliad: #NewSpecies discovered with the support of a citizen scientist in Minas Gerais
    gov.br/jbrj/en/subjects/news/h

"Its leaves are covered in white #trichomes, an unusual feature in #bromeliads... The hairy leaves are one of the characteristics that make this species so unique and which led #scientists to believe that they were actually dealing with another family of #plants... These hairs could have the function of absorbing water or even protecting against the loss of water"

Photographing #Cannabis #Trichomes, so hard I had to get back to the desk and a test subject to figure out the best setup without having my head buried between smelly sticky plants while attempting to think. This is the "#Apexel 200x" clip-on from AMZN with two quickly designed shims for alignment on distinct #iPhone 14 Pro lenses. (1/3)

  11. #Garden progress! These calyxes are starting to swell, and the pistils are turning orange. #Trichomes are beginning their frosty march across the leaves and #flowers. #Terpenes are filling the tent. The #cat grass helps keep the boys distracted while I garden. 😅🐈🍃

  12. An updated #taxonomic checklist of the Portugese #oaks is online, including good photos and SEM images of #trichomes, recognition of a few new #hybrids, and an updated key to the country's oaks.

This should also be a helpful resource for the #nomenclature of the #Mediterranean white oaks and holly oaks.

  13. Plants are hairy too

Trichomes of radicchio (a red bitter type salad common here in Italy) visible at the cell detail.

I'm so happy I got a pretty sharp pic even with my janky setup, in one of the photos the vacuoles with high anthocyanin (purple colour) content look pretty good!
