А так нашу работу (мы называемся Uniko), скорее всего, вы видели на сотрудниках Яндекса, VK, Касперского, КРОК, ОККО, Aviasales и в Сколково. Самое важное для наших заказчиков — UX одежды. Это внешнее качество и то, насколько хороши материалы, покрой и вообще исполнение. Ну, знаете, чтобы не было такого, что вы сидите, кодите, и вам всё время где-то на периферии сознания о себе напоминает шов сбоку или упирающаяся в шею неотрываемая без потерь бирка. Требования к качественному корпоративному мерчу сейчас похожи на те, что в профессиональной спортивной форме или в повседневных коллекциях модных брендов. Собственно, самый лютый вин, который у нас случался, — когда команда Assassin's Creed Valhalla заказывала себе внутренний мерч, у них был вариант взять одежду от Reebok, с которыми у студии была официальная коллаборация и релиз в магазинах. Но команда выбрала наши худи, потому что качество ткани, швов и посадки оказалось по факту лучше. Мы шьём всё сами. Обычная типография покупает стоковые майки или толстовки, шлёпает логотип, отдаёт. Но, конечно, я тут рассказать не про это, а про логистический ад, когда у вас в работе одновременно 200 крупных заказов в месяц.

Got us easily under the space constraint. But now they've pivoted to all code on BitBucket is trainable and I just can't abide that. I finished moving all repos to #ForgeJo. Now we're flying without the corporate "safety net" of many many replicated file systems. More at risk of failure, though we're backing up locally and offsite. But complete control and it's honestly faster. 😂

I used to use #trello before it enshittified. Switched to local #markdown notes with #Obsidian. Now I'm fully out.

Всегда считал системных администраторов здоровой профессией. Нормальные мужики, которые ругались матом и знали жизнь. Почти всю работу выполняли вручную, даже серверы иногда собирали из комплектующих. Да, получали меньше разрабов, но и преимущества в работе у них были: сразу видеть результат своих действий — приятно и полезно для психики. «Вижу проблему — ребутаю сервак», как говорится. Но потом всё изменилось. Сначала пришли облака с докерами и кубернетесом. Так появились девопсы. Профессия стала меняться. Следом в продвинутых компаниях появились корпадмины — вроде менеджеров, но с техническим уклоном. В итоге значительную часть работы теперь можно выполнять вообще на удалёнке!

If I'm reading this right, free BitBucket will have no opt out to training. I've already dumped #Trello. It seems like it's clock ticking to August 17th to move *all* our academic private repos to self hosted. They're forcing my hand. This will be rocky.

В моём таск-менеджере сейчас больше пятидесяти пунктов, которые начинаются не с «сделать», а с «получить от…». Документы от заказчиков, результаты от разработчиков, поручения трём личным ассистентам и даже путеводитель от девушки – всё это нужно не выполнять самому, а вовремя проверять и напоминать. Обычная колонка «Ожидаю» перестала справляться, когда ожиданий стало слишком много. Рассказываю, как я перестроил личную GTD-систему: отделил срок результата от даты следующего контроля, связал Trello с календарями, не стал дублировать GitLab и сохранил одну точку ответственности в иерархии ассистентов.

Десять с лишним лет теряю заметки

Недавно мне понадобилась старая заметка. Я точно помнил, что записывал её: там былы креды от сервиса (да, знаю надо хранить все в пароехарилках, но я записал как записал). Не помнил я только, где именно это записал( В Notepad++? В Obsidian? В сообщении самому себе? В папке проекта? Минут двадцать я перебирал места, и к концу уже не столько искал заметку, сколько пытался воскресить в памяти тот день что бы понять ход собственных мыслей Нашлась она в OneNote. В том самом OneNote, про который я уже и забы, что он у меня вообще есть и более того хранить что то ценное. Вот тогда до меня и дошла обидная вещь: за десять с лишним лет я неплохо научился записывать информацию и довольно плохо получать её обратно. Мест для записи у меня было столько, что одно из них выпало из моей собственной памяти.

Deleted my Trello account after 14 years. Switched over to my own self-hosted task tracker. Admit to being mildly freaked out but have run the new system side-by-side for the last two months and it's been fine.

Change is hard but decided it was better business practice to bring my project data in-house instead of having Atlassian copy it into AI models for other companies to use after August.

In case of failure

A catastrophic failure is always a system failure.

It could be the intern, it could be Your Plastic Pal Who’s Fun To Be With, or it could be those login details that you thought were secure on your help desk software. If you lose your production database, it’s not the fault of an individual, a robot or a third party.

There should be multiple points of protection between you and your data. The code should be tested, the logins should be secured, rotated, MFAd and audited, and admin access should be off by default.

It’s not another procedure on a document that no one reads or remembers; it’s a gateway that no one can forget. It’s not connecting from a developer machine; it’s a pipeline that only runs in a trusted environment after appropriate checks are made, and makes backups before making changes. It’s testing your backups.

It’s not about not trusting your team. I trust mine, but sometimes they get tired, and sometimes they get stressed, and I want them to burn whatever cycles they have on providing business value, not walking tightropes.

Can’t believe it took me this long but out of all the project management tools I’ve used, I like Trello the most (especially for managing personal projects - not that I’m good at that 😅)

If it hurts, stop doing it: the wrong person in the wrong place

Have you ever taken your goldfish for a walk and tried to play fetch?

They’re rubbish at it, you know. Complain all the time about the lack of “the environment”, like water is important to them or something. They don’t run. They don’t pick up sticks, even when you try to accommodate them with tiny twigs. Useless. No one should have one as a pet, no drive.

Dogs though. They walk, they run, they swim. They don’t need “accommodations” like a fish tank. What an ego, to put their name on their safe space. And then to tell me to stay out because I’m “toxic”, when they’re the ones who put something in there so I can’t breathe.

Fish! Honestly!

Know your worth. Know your strengths and your weaknesses, and don’t let someone else tell you you’re useless just because your way doesn’t align with theirs. Or because you have a different skill set.

Dear managers. Don’t judge your customer support teams on sales metrics. Don’t let your best people languish in a job that doesn’t suit them because you can’t think outside the box you put them in. They’re hurting. And it’s hitting the team. Know your gardeners from your innovators.

Sometimes the best fit for a person is a different company. That’s not a loss unless they’re stuck where they are (and please, let’s make sure there’s support and a safety net for people who have to leave before they find the right fit).

If it hurts doing what you’re doing every day, figure out what you should be doing. Or where you should be doing it. It’s not about avoiding stressful situations or being uncomfortable, but it is about avoiding burnout and aggression. You know your place, and if this place is your place. If it hurts, stretch it, move it, try something else.

Know thyself

For over 24 hours now #trello has been having some major issues - the comments on cards aren't showing. That's a pretty big part of what Trello does.

Atlassian's status page says they were "optimizing" [sic - come on, you're supposed to be an Australian company] a database.

I wonder how much #ai was involved in this error? Could those fired employees have avoided the problem?

JSON calls are returning errors containing full queries from the backend.

But rest assured, all engineers are vibe coding and prompting as hard as they can to solve the issue.

If it’s hurts, stop doing it : you don’t need to know everything

The best managers are great at delegation.

Micromanagement is exhausting. It’s stressful. And it creates delays and bugs because you become a black hole for ideas and improvements. You end up working longer hours. The job becomes painful.

So save yourself. Teach your team how you want feedback. Teach them what documentation makes sense. Make sure they highlight problems. And I’ll always make sure I’m available to answer questions in the stand-up, but 7 times out of 10, someone else beats me to it.

I don’t know everything, and I shouldn’t. A good manager is a catalyst for communication and generates questions to help. They’ll connect the problems with someone who can resolve them, and save some time to learn about the next problem.

Don’t be a bottleneck. Don’t be a critical path. Be a gardener and help the team grow. If it hurts, you might be strangling the team. Trust them and share the load.

Delegate, but make sure the important knowledge doesn’t go on holiday when your staff do.
