Peter van Onna: ‘Vrede van Utrecht is ook nu actueel’
Utrecht, 7-1-2013 – Driehonderd jaar geleden werd de Vrede van Utrecht getekend, die een eind maakte aan de slepende Spaanse successieoorlog en aan de Oorlog van Queen Anne. Met dit vredesverdrag werd ook de Franse hegemonie in Europa doorbroken en de positie van Engeland in Amerika versterkt.
Het duurde anderhalf jaar voor de vele partijen het met elkaar eens werden en het verdrag geldt als het begin van de moderne diplomatie. Ter ere van de ondertekening componeerde Händel in 1713 zijn Utrecht Jubilate én een Te Deum. Voor de viering van het derde eeuwfeest schrijft Peter van Onna (1966): The Treaty of Utrecht. Deze compositie wordt op 11 januari in première gebracht door de Radio Kamer Filharmonie in Vredenburg Leidsche Rijn en is live te beluisteren op Radio 4.
Het is de eerste politieke compositie van Peter van Onna, die hij componeerde in opdracht van de TROS en De Vrijdag van Vredenburg. Hij werd aangetrokken door het onderwerp, omdat de Vrede van Utrecht nog altijd actueel is: ‘Woedde er destijds oorlog, nu leven we in een tijd van economische en culturele neerslag en ook deze conflicten worden aan de onderhandeltafel beslecht.’
