TAITHCYMRU: Nine coaches a day from Carmarthen to Bangor, one going on to Holyhead, and the operators want drivers
The new TaithCymru coach will run nine times a day in each direction between Carmarthen railway station and Bangor when it launches on Sunday 25 October, Transport for Wales has confirmed.
One late-night journey each day will carry on beyond Bangor to Holyhead railway station and port. Transport for Wales says that improves connections with rail and ferry services for Anglesey and Ireland.
Edwards Coaches has been appointed to run the service as lead operator, working with Llew Jones. Both firms are now recruiting drivers ahead of the launch.
Every stop from Carmarthen to Bangor, and a five-hour run end to end
From Carmarthen, the coach calls at Aberaeron, Aberystwyth bus station, Aberystwyth University, Machynlleth, Dolgellau, Porthmadog and Caernarfon before reaching Bangor railway station.
The full journey is expected to take about five hours. TfW says that is up to an hour faster than existing public transport, with no change of vehicle.
Eight new coaches have been bought for the route. They are wheelchair accessible with dedicated luggage space, and the timetable is designed to connect with rail, local buses and TrawsCymru.
Lee Robinson, TfW’s executive director for regional transport and integration, said the appointment was “an important step towards giving customers a new way to travel across Wales”.
“The daily late-night extension to Holyhead will also strengthen links with Anglesey, Ireland and the wider public transport network,” he said.
Driving jobs with Edwards Coaches and Llew Jones
Jessica Thomas, from Edwards Coaches, said the firm was “proud to have been chosen” as lead operator. “We’re now recruiting drivers to join our team and help us provide the friendly, dependable service our customers expect.”
Steve Jones, from Llew Jones, said the partnership would “create better links for the communities we serve”. “We’re also looking for drivers to join us and play a key role in introducing this important new connection.”
Tickets from 6 October, fares still to come
Tickets go on sale online on Tuesday 6 October. TfW says more on fares and booking will appear on its website “shortly”, so two weeks before sales open, the price of a seat is still not public.
The coach will pull in at a station TfW is already asking passengers about. Its survey on making Carmarthen station work better as a train and coach interchange is open until 12 October.
The £2m committed to TaithCymru covers its first year, and the Welsh Government has said it will assess demand before deciding whether to fund it beyond that.

CARMARTHEN: TfW wants the railway station to work better as a train-and-coach interchange
Transport for Wales wants Carmarthen railway station to work better as the place where its TrawsCymru coaches and its trains meet, and is asking passengers what that should look like.
Its survey, open until 12 October, covers two things: the facilities at the station for people catching trains, and how the bus and rail services there “can be better worked together”, in the words of the consultation page. TfW staff will be at the station from 8am to 6pm on Thursday to take views in person.
The timing is the TaithCymru coach. From 25 October the new two-hourly express to Aberystwyth and Bangor will call at Carmarthen railway station on Station Road, according to the Welsh Government’s published list of stops.
Tickets go on sale on 6 October. The T1 to Aberystwyth already stops at the station.
Nathaniel Owen, TfW’s senior customer operations manager at Carmarthen, said the coach launch made it “definitely the right time for us to understand what improvements at Carmarthen railway station would enhance the overall customer experience”.

The consultation page is franker than the press release. “It’s important to remember funding isn’t guaranteed yet,” it says. “By having your say you can help us support our case to secure funding to propose improvements based on your feedback.”
So there is no designed or costed scheme; the ten-question survey is being used to build the case for one.
TfW’s release calls the station “a key interchange between TrawsCymru coach services and the rail network” and one of the busiest in the region, linking the town to trains for Swansea, Cardiff, Manchester and London and to Pembrokeshire.
Mr Owen said: “We really want to hear the thoughts of the people who care most about Carmarthen railway station: the people who use it. Your views will help us shape its future as a gateway to west Wales.”

Traws Link Cymru has campaigned since 2013 to reopen the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth railway, closed in the Beeching cuts; a 2018 Welsh Government study priced it at £775m and judged it only “socially viable”. The £2m committed to TaithCymru covers one year of running, with a decision on a second to follow.
Eight coaches have been bought for the route, which follows the T1 corridor through Lampeter and Aberaeron before heading north, and the government says the run to Bangor should take under five hours. The first coach was shown off at Bangor station in August.
The region’s transport map, which went to councillors this month, puts west Wales station upgrades in a later phase with no funding attached, and this year’s £24.7m regional pot is paying for a new bus and rail interchange at Llanelli.
Carmarthen is getting smaller council-side sums from the Welsh Government‘s regional transport grants for this year: £200,000 for an active travel route through the station and £175,000 for a cycle hub in the town.
The station has two platforms, a booking office, staff around the clock, a changing places toilet, car and cycle parking and a help point, TfW’s page says.
The survey takes five to ten minutes and is open to anyone who travels to, from or through Carmarthen, including people who don’t use the station at all.

Swansea MS meets First Bus to discuss future of city’s transport network
South Wales West MS Tom Giffard has met with FirstGroup representatives at the Senedd to discuss the future of Swansea’s bus services, including plans for electrification, franchising, and the impact of recent strikes.
The meeting comes as First Bus rolls out a £350 million national investment to electrify its fleet, converting diesel vehicles to electric and introducing new carbon‑neutral buses across Wales.
“Reliable, timely public transport”
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Giffard said he welcomed First Bus’s commitment to improving services:
“It was great to meet some of the team from First Bus to talk through their commitment to helping provide a timely, reliable public transport system, as well as their huge investment into a fleet of brand‑new carbon‑neutral buses across Wales, many of which will be coming to Swansea soon.
“I sincerely hope the Welsh Government engage with First Bus to enable them to help build the services people across Swansea deserve.”
He also raised concerns about the impact of the default 20mph speed limit on bus routes and journey times, calling for greater investment in roads and junction upgrades along the M4 at Ynysforgan and Penllergaer.
On social media, Mr Giffard shared a light‑hearted post after trying out one of the new buses himself:
“Good to get behind the wheel of a new First bus coming to a Swansea street near you very soon. But don’t worry, hopefully the drivers won’t still be on strike by then, so I won’t be the one behind the wheel!”
First Cymru: Net zero ambitions
Rob Pymm, Commercial Director for First Bus in Cymru, said the company was pleased to hear Mr Giffard’s support for their net zero ambitions.
“We were pleased to meet Tom Giffard MS this week and hear he is supporting our moves to a net zero fleet with £350million invested so far nationally to electrify our depots and buses.
“The arrival of electric buses in Swansea will depend on franchise plans by Transport for Wales (TfW) and Welsh Government, and we’ll continue to work closely with TfW to lend our expertise in this area to help ensure our net‑zero ambitions arrive in the country. We already operate eight electric TrawsCymru buses on the growing T1 service as part of our partnership with TfW.”
Looking ahead
While the timeline for electric buses in Swansea will depend on Welsh Government franchising decisions, both First Cymru and Mr Giffard emphasised the importance of building a transport system that is affordable, reliable and sustainable.
Mr Giffard said he would continue to advocate for improvements and invited Swansea residents to share feedback on issues they want raised.

A new #TrawsCymru T51 bus service, launching in September 2025, will improve public #transport links between Rhyl, Denbigh, Ruthin, and Wrexham as part of Network North Wales.
