There is only one new thing in the latest update to Star Systems: you can update the app from within it without having to download it again. You’ll need to download this update of course, but then you can “Check for Updates…”

The new ship design/validation tool for my Star Systems app is now completed. It supports both core and High Guard rules/options. You can use it to just validate a starship or you can save a full starship with a configuration, type, name, and description. You can also add one or more images. This version is not yet published as I have more tests to run, but soon.

My code now generates not only the main world in a system, but all planets, gas giants, planetoid belts, and all of their satellites, including day length and year length, taking into account tide-locked planets or satellites, etc.

Conversation on discord has me thinking about Traveller again. (Still?)

More precisely, ship sizes. I definitely prefer a smaller ship universe. By MT battleships are 500-700k tons. But even mid CT after high guard things like the Azanti is 60k.

But if we go back to where the Kinunir is a Cruiser at 1,200 tons, and a light mercenary cruiser is 800 tons, what size should we cap battleships and carriers?

@deinol I'm hopeful to run #traveller5 at this year's TravCon UK. I need to spend some time gettingmy head around it and perhaps building a quick reference sheet. I haven't tested the mechanics in any detail, but may need to apply some alternative simple structure to combat encounters.

T5 would be a refreshing change to Mongoose Traveller, much as I enjoy that ruleset.

I was curious if anyone else ever talks about #Traveller5 on here. At least in the feed connected to my server, no. 😅

I know it’s not the most popular edition, but I really love how its rules for building ships and other equipment at all tech levels.

Anyway, if there are other #T5 fans out there, ping me and I’ll give a follow.

I also love #ClassicTraveller of course.

I did a rough calculation for 4 TLs, since the classic Scout is TL-C. All 200 ton Far Recons, with fuel for two jumps. So they can jump away from the fleet and return even if the enemy controls fuel sources. Two crew each.

Of course I named them after pets past and present.

Every once in a while I ponder making a website that would manage the Fifth Frontier War. Or any large Traveller conflict.

The trickiest part is the propagation of information. I’d need to track what info each fleet knows about and how old it is.

Not that I should be starting projects for hypothetical games.

I’m working on adapting the #Mindjammer setting (which has a Mongoose #Traveller version) to #Traveller5. Such a cool setting!

But one thing I noticed about the T5 rules is while pop code is used when looking for passengers, it isn’t for determining availability of speculative cargo.

One world they visited has a population of 60, I determined it was a mostly automated factory creating TL 13 Vargr Battle Suits. So I figured they could easily figure out supplies to sell there. But available trade goods? Probably not.

Finally caught up on the record keeping for my Traveller game. In session I was focusing on adventures, the normal buy and sell I put off for a few months.

I’ve been using the T5 speculative trade prices, and very rarely is it not a net positive to buy at one system and sell at the next, although there was once where I held the cargo. After 200 days, 11 jumps, 7 systems they made ~½MCr.

Ran my nephew Traveller game today. Having finished up the Great Hunt and received a nice payout, they did some shopping at the Vargr Capital, buying Battle Dress for their Vargo crewman.

Savage Vole, a contact from the Hunt, hired them to go investigate a distress report from an experimental gas giant mining platform.

Bugs in the System (Star Frontiers) begins.

Thinking about the economics of fleet maintenance.

The only system with a class A starport that can build jump 3 ships. Soung is higher tech, but the lack of asteroid belts means fewer resources, so might contribute flagships. But the bulk of the fleet is built at Gvaerlik. Population only 90k. How many ship tons can it build a year?

Thinking about my Vargr exclave, ran some population numbers.

The population is a little over 16.6 Billion, probably 85% Vargr, 7% Zhodani, 5% Vilani, and 3% other.

The vast majority of people are on the capital Okhokferr (9B) and Rekhzor (7B). Only other major planet is Ghaerlag (0.4B), gateway to Zhodani.

Okhokferr is a theocracy run by Kukh Akaiya, “Members of Akaiya’s Pack”. Led by Roukh Vaergvue, “Emperor Dragon”.

Traveller

I may be weird, but I usually don’t worry variations from different ship design systems. As long as it’s legal in the system it was designed with, it’s good enough for me. I just chalk it up to deviations from different shipyards.

So I’ll use anything from Classic Traveller to T5 to Cepheus. In the end the only real difference is a few MCr here or there.

My group did “training week” for the Vargr Great Hunt. They were tested on marksmanship, archery, climbing, riding, stealth, and camp setup. Perfect score would be 90.

The PCs did not do very well, Captain Feyne Vyren got the lowest rating, Evicru Nur is middle of the pack.

They are being split into four teams for the next event, an Arctic Gazelle capture.
