Raleigh Is Closed – Due To Winter Storm

Raleigh, North Carolina, is feeling the full impact of a powerful winter storm this weekend, and that has led to serious travel disruptions across the city — including the closure of the Raleigh Beltline (Interstate 440). As sleet, freezing rain, and icy conditions build up on roads throughout Wake County, transportation officials made the call to shut down sections of the city’s ring road for public safety. 

The storm has brought dangerous travel conditions, ice accumulation, and widespread slick surfaces, prompting local and state leaders to urge residents to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely essential. In addition to the Beltline closure, multiple accidents and hazardous conditions have been reported across major corridors, underscoring how quickly conditions deteriorated as freezing rain coated surfaces. 

This severe weather event comes with broader impacts across central North Carolina. A winter storm warning remains in effect through Monday, and the City of Raleigh has declared a state of emergency, warning of continued ice, power outages, and treacherous travel as the storm progresses. 

Officials continue to monitor conditions and will reopen roads only when it is safe to do so. For now, the safety message remains the same: Stay home, stay warm, and avoid travel if possible.
