There was a tiny bit of scary snow out west but excellent Fall weather has now returned due to that Super Duper thingy happening in the Pacific Ocean. So #RoadTrip planning can continue for the foreseeable future. Here's some excellent small town exploration options for southwest Saskatchewan. If we keep ignoring that #WinterIsComing, it's likely never going to happen.

Renting a motorcycle or car is a fantastic way to explore scenic provincial highways and vibrant cities. However, checking provincial licence classifications, insurance coverage, and seasonal weather conditions beforehand is essential.

Depending on your latitude the #FallColours are on full display or getting ready to put on a show. If you're looking for the ideal #RoadTrip to experience this annual show then put the Agawa Canyon train tour on your list for next year (I think it may be too late for 2026). My wife and I took this train ride in the 80s and it was worth the day long investment.

If you haven't heard, the #RoadTrip season has been extended by some weird weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean. So why not get out with friends & family to find out what Ontario small town life is like. Whether you're into the fall colours, unique shopping or sampling food from small town chefs, there's likely something for you on this list. Remember to say "Hello" to everyone.

If you can believe the weather prognosticators, we have 3+ months of Fall remaining. That means a longer #RoadTrip season to learn more about our awesome country. I haven't focused on Quebec lately so we'll start with La Belle Province and provide some solid suggestions for small towns to visit and explore. Bienvenue.

Most Canadians are aware that #Vikings visited Labrador 1,000 years ago but the largest settlement of Icelandians is in Gimli Manitoba. Over 125 years ago volcanic eruptions in Iceland drove several waves of refugees to New Iceland on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg. Today Gimli is famous for its annual Icelandic Festival and a 4.6 metre tall Viking Statue.

If you're planning a Fall trip to Halifax there are numerous touristy things to visit but one memorial should be at the top of your list. Eric the Red was an RCO for the CSS Acadia, a Canadian Scientific Ship that served the Royal Canadian Navy in both world wars and now a designated national historic site on the Halifax harbour. Eric served with distinction for almost 20 years.

  8. Visit the World's Largest Fiddle in Sydney, Nova Scotia 🎻

Standing tall on the Sydney waterfront, this 60-foot fiddle celebrates Cape Breton’s rich Celtic musical traditions. Known as the 'Big Fiddle,' it welcomes visitors arriving by sea and pays tribute to local culture and maritime heritage.

When I'm working on a #TravelCanada post I sometimes realize that I don't give Saskatchewan a lot of attention. I apologize to the Saskies in my audience. To celebrate the province's 121st anniversary of joining Canada (Sept 1st, 1905), here are 3 #ProvincialParks that are hidden gems. Remember, when you're taking the grids it's local courtesy to wave or nod as you drive by.

If you're looking for a start or end point for your next #TravelCanada adventure, then consider the Mile O landmark. Located in Victoria BC, it marks the beginning of the 7,821 km Trans-Canada Highway that runs to St. John's NFLD. Construction of the highway started in 1950 and completed in 1971. Including connecting routes, designated as part of the Trans-Canada, the highway is approximately 12,800 km long.

The biggest event in Canada is now in its 2nd week - the Canadian National Exhibition. The CNE, or the Ex as the cool kids call it, has been the biggest event in Canada since 1879 because it's held in Toronto, acknowledged as the centre of the universe. Don't be a hater.
In keeping with Toronto’s reputation for art and cuisine, here is a summary of the CNE's wacky foods you can expect.

You may think that some municipalities, in their efforts to attract tourists, must have been smoking something really good when they decided on their #BigStuffInSmallTowns monument. That's how you end up with a 6 metre long tobacco pipe in St. Claude Manitoba. Yes there's a reasonable explanation for its existence but I think chemicals were involved in the inspiration.

When you think about a #RoadTrip in Saskatchewan you might expect driving through interesting but eventually boring flat landscape for hours. Not so my fellow Canucks. The province is full of visual treats and unique geography that will surprise you, if you look for them.

If you're looking to visit one of Canada’s 37 #NationalParks, but hiking until exhaustion is not your thing, then Georgian Bay Islands National Park Is for you. It's our smallest park at 14 km/2 and quiet with approximately 28,000 visitors annually. Less than a 2 hour drive from Toronto, the park is part of the UNESCO Georgian Bay Littoral Biosphere Reserve.

Today's #TravelCanada suggestion is a Canadian island in The Bay of Fundy connected to New Brunswick by ferry and by bridge to Maine. That U.S link exists because Campobello Island was the Roosevelt summer retreat. This Wiki article is full of historical tidbits and includes gems like: the sole proprietor of the island took great interest in building the island community but struggled with an "addiction" to local women.

My 1st car was a 1973 Celica that I tuned to 103 hp with improved handling. That meant I was always looking for some twisty road to throw it into corners and shift aggressively as I attacked the next bend. I wish I had known about these 5 roads, ranked as some of Ontario’s best winding experiences. I probably would have lost my license.
Highly recommended for a car or motorcycle #RoadTrip.

Why should you visit Fort St James, a town of 73,000 only incorporated in 1952? It is the oldest continually inhabited town in Canada west of the Rockies and served as an economic hub in B.C. for 100 years before the railway arrived. The outpost's log buildings have been preserved and you can get a real sense of how the fur trade built Canada.

If you want to get to the end of the road in Alberta, you're likely travelling Highway #2. This major highway stretches from the Canada–United States border through Alberta's largest cities, Calgary & Edmonton, to Grande Prairie. It runs for approximately 1,273 km, the longest and busiest highway in Alberta. The Fort Macleod–Edmonton section forms a portion of the CANAMEX Corridor that links Alaska with Mexico.

If you're looking for a unique #TravelCanada destination then Flin Flon has to be on your list. You may wonder why I'd recommend a mining town with a funny name. Flin Flon was named after a character in a 1905 #SyFy novel and is one of two towns in Canada that is separated by a provincial border. The town lies in a band of volcanic rock giving it a unique landscape in Manitoba.

In B.C. there is an unknown small competition for recognition of the tiniest #ProvincialPark. B.C. Parks tells us that it's Memory Park on Vancouver Island but @thetyee has an indepth article on the history of Dead Man's Island and has used satellite measurements to prove this park is the smallest. Warning - the article is long and fascinating, and worth it.

I haven't shown Saskatchewan much love in my #TravelCanada posts, not intentional... I think, except for some info on Moose Jaw smuggler tunnels. Let's rectify that oversight by giving you 10 awesome places to visit in the Land of Living Skies. My daughter and son-in-law lived for a year in Saskatoon and loved it, and they highly recommend visiting Grasslands National Park and Canada's Dead Sea.

One of Canada’s unique parks is one you may not have heard about. Kejimkujik National Park covers 404 km2 in southwest Nova Scotia. A large inland portion makes up the National Historic Site, and the Kejimkujik National Park Seaside is on the province's Atlantic coast. It is also designated a National Dark Sky Preserve. Rest up for your visit - Kejimkujik means "tired muscles" in the Mi'kmaq language.

If you've been paying attention to these morning posts, and I'm surprised if you are, then you know that Alberta has a #BigStuffInSmallTowns trail where you can visit several weird roadside attractions in a single madcap weekend. Manitoba may not have as many but today we offer a travel website that highlights 6 of their most prominent monuments that should be on your bucket list. Especially Sara the camel.

In 2013 a silly little survey with zero statistical evidence nominated our nation's capital as the most #Boring city in Canada. It somehow got picked up by major news organizations - must have been a boring news week - and Ottawa has been trying to erase that reputation for 13 years. Let's update that study with the same rigorous standards, meaning none.

#TravelCanada explorations should include small towns that may surprise you. Take Alix Alberta, a tiny settlement of 774 residents near Red Deer. You want ##BigStuffInSmallTowns - It has Alix the Gator for a mascot. You want #Museums - It has the Wagon Wheel Museum. You want #History - Alix is the hometown of Irene Parlby, 1 of the "Famous Five" who sued the Canadian government, forcing them to legally recognize women as persons.

If I ever got a hankering to work for the Government it would be with #ParksCanada. Me driving around in a pickup truck telling Grizzlies to behave. Parks Canada manages 37 National Parks, 11 national park reserves, 5 National Marine Conservation Areas, 171 National Historic Sites, 1 National Urban Park (Rouge), and 1 National Landmark (Pingo). Established May 19, 1911, it was the world's 1st national park service.

Banff and Jasper #NationalParks are popular #TravelCanada destinations every summer, averaging 4m and 2m annual visitors respectively. Perhaps you are looking for similar experiences but maybe want to go somewhere with fewer crowds. Thankfully #ParksCanada is thinking about you and has recommendations for the hiking trail less traveled.
BTW - Tuktut Nogait National Park reported 2 visitors in 2025
