  1. Episode 6 really shows you how and why the Oligarchs learnt to manipulate democracy (towards the beginning). But it's also pretty violent, viewer discretion is advised. youtube.com/watch?v=1YogE8ZAVT #TraumaZone #democracy #US #Russia #ussr

  2. "The most terr[or]ific thing over the whole documentary was, how often greedy corrupt criminals ruined everything. It's just shocking to see, how [so] few people ruin the life of millions just to become rich." - @johannesbenchekmoumou8445 (inserts are mine)

  3. For those still thinking the average Russian had anything whatsoever to do with Putin, the 2022 #AdamCurtis documentary #TraumaZone is worth a revisit. Of special interest is who it was who advised the Kremlin to take the route it did, and you'll never guess who…

  4. While its events are a quarter century ago, I'm nonetheless wondering if this old #AdamCurtis thing might still be relevant:

  5. @lari #Yeltsin’s complete non-good-guyness was also pointed out convincingly in Adam Curtis’ excellent #TraumaZone. imdb.com/title/tt22059224/

    A strong recommendation.

  6. Started watching #TraumaZone by #AdamCurtis last night.

What a surreal dive into the absurdity of #SovietUnion! (I binged to the third episode, and #communism is finally collapsing.)

Feels also surreal to remember how normal it all was considered back in the day here in #Finland. Crappy? Sure! Unjust? Sure! Bureaucratic? Sure!

But doomed to fall in a couple of years? Are you kidding me! #USSR’s here to stay, just get used to it.

  7. Adam Curtis on the fall of the Soviet Union's worrying parallels with modern Britain (and everywhere else) and the difficulties of governance in the Age of Extreme Individualism

  8. @teledyn

    Fabulous documentary!

Here's another site where all the parts of this documentary are available: thoughtmaybe.com/russia-1985-1

  9. Ever wonder where all those Russian oligarchs came from? Or how their people fared as the money and goods vanished?

  10. #TraumaZone was pretty bloody brilliant, and also pretty bloody bleak.

  11. I really appreciate watching Adam Curtis' documentary Traumazone. So much strong material speaking for itself.

But there is one deeply disturbing thing, namely the subtitle: "Russia 1985–1999".
It's very misleading, because #Traumazone is only partly a story about Russia.
A large part of the time (maybe 1/3) is spent telling parallel post-war histories about Kazakstan, Ukraine, etc. Countries which are NOT parts of Russia.

In effect, the framing serves to normalize Russian colonialism. Even though much of the content works in the opposite direction.

  12. For those of you wondering why #ElonMusk would gleefully piss away billions just to destroy his investment I highly recommend any (and all) of #AdamCurtis’s recent documentaries: #HyperNormalisation (2016), #CantGetYouOutOfMyHead (2021), and Russia 1985-1999: #TraumaZone (2022). You can find all of them on YouTube or (probably) through the BBC.

Here’s a compilation of clips I made from the middle one because I wanted to remember it (and am also a huge nerd.)

  13. Just finished watching Adam Curtis’ epic #traumazone, a 7 part compilation of BBC archived film material about the fall of communism and democracy in #Russia 1985-1999. filmsforaction.org/watch/traum There is a clear line from what happened in Lithuania (1990), Georgia (1992), Chechnya (1993) to the war in #Ukraine and we all looked the other way. Tragic.

  14. @lambert The problem is not discarding the #EconomicModel, it's what do you replace it with, and how do you ease into that transition?
Just look at #Russia to see how to botch the transition to another economic model, and the mess that follows.
#AdamCurtis has a great #Documentary released just last month that might be worth watching It's called Russia 1985-1999: TraumaZone
