Our family participated in our first #GreenUpDay, a #Vermont tradition. We picked up #litter in our neighborhood park and stream, both of which were already very clean. Our haul was mostly #plastic, with the most common items being cigarette #butts and #wrappers. Our biggest retrieval was this #bike frame, but I had to leave behind several large items partially buried in rocks and sediment in the streambed and a #tire with a tree growing through it. #GreenUp #PlasticPollution #TrashyStreams

Urban #trashystreams mostly suffer from #PlasticPollution, but can also be affected by Pasta Pollution?!
This story out of #NewJersey highlights the continuing problem of illegal #dumping (or mismanaged waste) especially in areas with inadequate and costly disposal services. And the problem is small in the US relative to the developing world.

At the moment a lot of my research focuses on #PlasticPollution and #TrashyStreams. Why?
At least in part, it’s because of my 7 year old who has been obsessed with garbage and recycling since age 2 and brings books like this home from the library.

Digging through National Archives photos of the Cuyahoga River and I found this 1975 image of an open dump on the banks of Mill Creek, just upstream of one of our #trashystreams reaches. That would explain some of the old things we found.
