Joe Meek in Yellowstone, 1829: Fur trappers were the earliest non-indigenous people to explore the Yellowstone plateau in the Rocky Mountains. Among them was a teenage adventurer from Virginia named Joe Meek. During his first summer in the Rockies, a surprise attack sent him fleeing to Yellowstone, where he was one of the earliest non-indigenous people to experience its bizarre landscape.
