New publication out 🆕 📤
"No evidence of transposable element bursts in the Galápagos Scalesia adaptive radiation despite hybridization, diversification and ecological niche shifts"
https://mobilednajournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13100-025-00362-z
🔍 Despite rapid speciation, niche shifts, & hybridization, we found no significant TE accumulation differences across species or hybrids.
🌵 Even in arid-adapted lineages—where genome downsizing may be expected—TEs didn’t decline.

How tiny algae shaped the #evolution of giant clams https://phys.org/news/2025-01-tiny-algae-evolution-giant-clams.html https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-024-07423-8
"T. maxima have evolved more genes for sensors to distinguish friendly #algae from harmful #bacteria, #viruses... it has tuned down some of its immune genes in a way that likely helps the #animals tolerate #microbes... As a result of the weakened #ImmuneSystem, its genome contains a large number of #TransposableElements left behind by viruses. These aspects highlight the tradeoffs of #symbiosis"

Where do new genes come from? @HassanZaman91 @barricklab &co show that within the timescale of the #LTEE experiment, the co-option of #promoters, mainly from #TransposableElements, serves as the major source of raw material for #DeNovoGenes #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/4a8p6DT

My paper just got accepted just before the end-of-the-year celebrations 🥳 Although modest, the story remains cool and promising for future investigations in the coming years!
I focused on how transposable elements behave while mouse fetal gonads differentiate as testes or ovaries.

.@AnnaOsnato &co explore a #PLOSBiology study which reveals a previously undefined group of cells in the early human #embryo that diverges from the main lineages & undergoes apoptosis through the activity of young #TransposableElements https://plos.io/3CHIA45

Hi the fediverse!
Our lastest paper on the theoretical dynamics of transposable elements is out (in Theor Pop Biol: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0040580923000096 , in @biorxiv_evobio : https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.07.05.498868v2). We derived population genetics models of TE amplification when regulated by piRNAs, accoding to the "trap model". -> Thread

Long-standing #genomics mystery about the origins of #introns explained in new study
https://phys.org/news/2022-11-long-standing-genomic-mystery-introns.html#TransposableElements drive #intron gain in diverse eukaryotes https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2209766119
The researchers believe that #introners (specialized #transposons) are the only likely explanation for intron burst events, in which thousands of introns show up in a #genome seemingly all at once, and they find evidence of this in species across the eukaryotic tree of life.

The #Fediscience #mastodon instance kindly asks for an #introduction. Here it is:
I am an evolutionary biologist at #IDEEV (#CNRS #UniversiteParisSaclay, France). Wide interests in #Evolution, including #PopGen, #QuantitativeGenetics, #SystemsBiology, and #Genome evolution (in particular, #TransposableElements). Mostly #Theory and #DataAnalysis.
I am part of the recent #twitterMigration of #Academia, and very happy to find so many people #ESEBFolks here!
