🚨 New paper out! 🚨
We tracked 587 workers.
🏡 Improving just residential walkability isn’t enough.
🏢 Commercial, leisure, and other daily destinations also shape how people travel, and how much carbon they emit.🔍 We also identified distinct “emitter profiles” based on car access, job type & gender.
🧭 Urban climate policy needs to move beyond the 15-minute city ideal.

Back to the fuel guzzlers? Coalition plans to end EV tax breaks would hobble the clean transport transition.

Study: Demand-side strategies enable rapid and deep cuts in #buildings and #transportemissions to 2050
* Electrification alone could cut direct emissions by 45-77% in buildings, 22-86% in transport by 2050.
* Combining electrification, efficiency improvements, and behavioral changes could reduce emissions even further: 51-85% for buildings and 37-91% for transport by 2050.
* A multi-strategy approach would lower overall electricity demand by 8-33% per year, making the transition more cost-effective and reducing strain on power grids. We have the tools! #ClimateSolutions #ClimateCrisis

Latest Climate Action Tracker assessment 24 Oct 2024 on #Aviation sector: rated as Critically Insufficient.
Despite agreeing on ‘carbon neutral growth’ in 2020 & a ‘long-term aspirational goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050’, there's little sign of appropriate action from #ICAO govts to reduce international aviation emissions.

In a #climateemergency, approving a 3rd runway to #MelbourneAirport will increase #Aviation emissions by 55%, when we need to reduce emissions. Alternative fuels such as SAF is magical thinking, will not compensate.

The 🇦🇺Federal Infrastructure and Transport Department has released an Aviation White paper predicated on #aviation growth which fails to include any substantial decarbonisation targets, demand management options, and relies on expensive alternative aviation fuels (SAF) and carbon offsets that will not achieve net zero by 2050.

1. Current #FCEV energy efficiency powering the vehicle is about 40% whereas #BEV is at 80%.
2. more moving parts in a FCEV which means more longterm maintenance cost.
3. It will take time to build renewables and electrolyzers for #GreenHydrogen. Current industrial #fossilfuel based #hydrogen use in Australia is 500,000 tonnes per year. Government budgeting green hydrogen production of around 500,000 tonnes per year into 2040s, not enough to reduce #transportEmissions -
Australia's green #hydrogen plans questioned.
* Current industrial hydrogen use in Australia is 500,000 tonnes per year derived from #fossilfuels.
* The Commonwealth Government is budgeting for green hydrogen production of around 500,000 tonnes per year into the 2040s.
* Given the first users of green hydrogen will be existing industrial users of fossil hydrogen including in petrochemicals, plastics, fertilizer production, this leaves no hydrogen for export from Australia.( let alone for use in reducing #transportemissions such as in road freight, rail, maritime, aviation)#ClimateCrisis #energy

Is the #Hydrogen vehicle dream over for #Australia? Basically yes. Battery electric cars are more efficient. Hydrogen cars are a distraction pushed by the likes of Toyota such as at the #Olynpics.

TL;DR: Fossil fuel driven car will continue remain a necessary evil this century due to poor social and economic policies. There is no escape.
For all practical purposes Bertha Benz, wife of Karl Benz, can be considered the first person to refuel by purchasing ligroin (a petroleum spirit that was commonly used as an organic solvent in chemical laboratories) from Stadt-Apotheke (Town Pharmacy) in Wiesloch during August 1888. And Stadt-Apotheke can considered the world’s first filling station.
During 1888, the global CO2 levels were 31 percent lower than today (425 ppm).
There will be a person who will eventually buy fossil fuel for the last time from the world's last filling station before disposing off the fossil fuel driven vehicle. When will that happen? The exact date of the last purchase of fossil fuel remains uncertain due to the dynamic nature of fossil fuel reserves and consumption patterns. My guess is that eventuality will not happen during this century.
In 2018 global CO2 emissions from transport was 24% of CO2 emissions from energy. 74.5% of those transport emissions came from road vehicles.
It is unfortunate that due to poor social and economic policies, an elegant invention like car ended up seriously challenging the urban environment, infrastructure and liveability. This is how I feel while living in Bengaluru where car has become a necessary evil.

Worth reading this blog by @danielbowen on why people in Melbourne/Australia don't use public transport often, even with low fares. Its all in the service availability and frequency. .
We really do need a turn up and go service frequency model to encourage mobility usage change to reduce car use and reduce #TransportEmissions. Cost is a small consideration, and can be done by targeted discounts.

Extreme heat forces US airlines to limit passengers and fuel loads in the #Heatwave
#AviationEmissions adding to #climateChange which then impacts aviation

I’m at the CANA sustainable transport workshop today in Melbourne, cycled the 14km in from Fawkner. Ventilation is good at the multicultural hub venue with 589ppm CO2. Lots of positive discussion on tackling #TransportEmissions.
I caught the #UpfieldWave in Brunswick following the train across 5 road crossings. Hope Skyrail will provide similar cycling priorities -
Net-zero aviation: Time for a new business model?

In: Journal of Air Transport Management, Volume 107, March 2023 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0969699722001727?via%3DihubHIGHLIGHTS
🛬 Provides a model for a credible and reliable net-zero pathway.
✈️ Shows that business-as-usual scenarios will deplete remaining carbon budget.
✈️ Argues that CO2-price and 4%/yr−1 drop-in quota necessary for transition.
✈️ Highlights the central role of climate governance in creating markets.
✈️ Concludes that new business model for aviation needed."Key transition technologies are in early stages of technology readiness, their scalability is uncertain, and airlines are not profitable. The replacement of fossil fuels will demand drop-in quota legislation at a global scale."
"If the current business model – volume growth with very small profit margins – is continued, it is likely that aviation's contribution to climate change will grow, due to constraints in biofuel production, cost, and an increase in non-CO2 warming. To stay within 1.5 °C warming, the sector has to reassess capacity and its relationship with profitability; and to possibly embrace an altogether different business model."

On Transport Australia needs to act with urgency on all fronts – cars, freight and aviation – to get transport emissions on track for net zero. They are presently increasing.
Needs fuel efficiency standards, EVs, more public transport and active transport, more freight to rail (and sea), upgrade of Melbourne - Sydney rail corridor in fast rail in medium term and high speed east coast rail network in the long term.
And why is Melbourne Airport proposing a 3rd runway to induce growth in avation and #aviationemissions?

Prime Minister Albanese needs to get to work on promises of Sydney to Hunter Region fast rail project as a priority project for a newly established High Speed Rail Authority for Australia. Domestic #aviationemissions in #Auspol are 8% of Australian #TransportEmissions and are projected to grow over the coming decade. #HighSpeedRail -
Domestic aviation emissions make up about 8% of Australia's #transportemissions. They reduced during the pandemic, but with expectations to grow again.
"Emissions from domestic aviation were 8 Mt CO2-e in 2019, or 8% of total transport emissions. In 2022, emissions in this sector were 6 Mt CO2-e. As activity returns to pre-pandemic levels, emissions are projected to reach almost 9 Mt CO2-e in 2023, and then grow steadily with activity to 10 Mt CO2-e in 2035." says Australia’s emissions projections 2022 report.
Domestic #AviationEmissions are growing when we need to be reigning them in. It is the wrong time to be expanding airports (3rd runway at #MelbourneAirport) which will induce more emissions.
