  1. Shifting, a poem of hope

Photo by Anna Shvets on Pexels.com
    Shifting
    Ajune’s past was
    scratched off and abandoned,
an old snake’s skin left to decay on the couch.

    Free of old fears,
    unblinded eyes registered
the beauty of the moment as each box filled.

    Youth is moved through
    trembling fingers, shifting
innocence from the present into the past.

    The ones who should
    shelter and care, instead
crumple pictures and faces, turning away.

    The last scene of
    a bystander life fades
into an exciting new play called Freedom.

    Family should love.
But the freed soul can shine
from within, blooming with courageous self-love.

    Shedding hurtful
    perspectives and cruel words,
Ajune passed through, into a hopeful future.

  8. Sloppy kissers, swamp suitors, scrappy “limbwrecked boys,” and drag queens drenched in glitter sweat... Next Saturday, South Carolina poet Evelyn Berry will share work from her recently published collection "Grief Slut" alongside readings by local poets Dustin Brookshire and Sera Joy.

"Grief Slut" is an examination of the queer lineage of pleasure, grief, and resilience in the American South. Berry offers a portrait of a girl living through boyhood and grappling with the violence of nostalgia in poems that blend high art, archival slivers, and Taco Bell. This collection invites us into a landscape where each day is trespass and queer youth fight to hear one another breathe just a little while longer.

More information about this free, in-person event can be found at firestorm.coop/events/3125-gri.

  12. If you're interested in #lgbtq #lit, and since it's #trans awareness, here's a book of poems you might find rewarding: the little volume Dialectic of the Flesh (Roz Kaveney). I wrote a review of it a little while back: outsideofacat.wordpress.com/20
