Recent research has highlighted that patients with ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) often show signs of T cell exhaustion, similar to what we see in chronic infections and cancer. This opens up intriguing possibilities for treatment.
The most promising therapeutic avenue? Repurposing immune checkpoint inhibitors—such as anti-PD-1 or anti-CTLA-4 antibodies—already used in oncology to reverse T cell exhaustion. These agents could potentially restore immune function in ME/CFS, but rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm their safety and efficacy in this context.
Other exciting areas under investigation include targeting metabolic and epigenetic pathways that contribute to T cell dysfunction, though these are still in early stages.
As research evolves, immune modulation may become a key pillar in ME/CFS management. I’m eager to see how these developments unfold and what they could mean for patients.
