Days at the Morisaki Bookshop and I'm still thinking about that tiny Tokyo used bookstore. Uncle-niece healing, secondhand book magic, and a slow burn kind of comfort read. 4 stars and already queued up book two. #DaysAtTheMorisakiBookshop #SatoshiYagisawa #TranslatedFiction #JapaneseFiction #Cozy

The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enriquez (trans. Megan McDowell)
A solid set of shorts stories that are graphic and gruesome; some of which do explore interesting ideas. I just felt some needed to be fleshed out more to have the necessary impact that I'm sure she was aiming for.

A new favourite author/book: Danish writer Solvej Balle and her On The Calculation of Volume, a literary fiction novel in 7 parts about a woman stuck in the same day, the 18th of November. I just finished the 2nd part and now have to wait for the next two to be released in English...on November 18. :ablobdundundun: Highly recommend, especially if you're currently having an existential crisis, lol.

In her collection, Akutagawa Prize-winning author Tomoka Shibasaki juggles with specificity and vagueness through almost comically long full sentence titles and unnamed characters who often disappear altogether. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2025/02/22/books/tomoka-shibasaki/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #culture #books #tomokashibasaki #pollybarton #japaneseliterature #translatedfiction

I don't get why the translator chose to change the name of the main heroine to "Flora" instead of keeping the original "Fennimor[e]" (from Old French 𝘧𝘪𝘯 "fine, splendid" + 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘳 "love"). The original name is much more evocative.
In any case, this fine and splendid romance was an enjoyable first read of the year.

2/x Fave reads of 2023…
I loved two fresh and startling new translations out of India that tell stories about class and cities:
"Mohanaswamy" by Vasudhendra is a Kannada novel about a gay man from small town Karnataka, and the Bengali-language Chandal Jibon trilogy by Manoranjan Byapari is a little like the dark underbelly of a Satyajit Ray film.

Had a gut feeling I was butchering the pronunciation of the title character's name. No, it's not "Kneels Line" but something more like "Nills Lune" (as in Clair de Lune). Was also pleasantly surprised to discover the novel was translated by a favourite Australian author.
#AmReading NIELS LYHNE by #JPJacobsen tr. by #HenryHandelRichardson (pen name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson).

Even though I know what happens in the end (because I accidentally read the sequel first), the story is so gripping, the writing & the translation so good, that I've been reading the novel all day. I've got forty pages to go & I'm determined to finish it tonight as I'm flying to Tasmania tomorrow morning & one never knows...I'd like to at least arrive safely at one destination.
#AmReading INFERNO (original title: TORMENTO) by #BenitoPérezGaldós tr. by Abigail Lee Six

Had I read the introduction to THAT BRINGAS WOMAN first, I would have found out it forms a sequel to INFERNO. Although the novels can be read independently, I feel like I might have enjoyed them more if I'd read them in order. Reading novels out of order: as in real life, what we find out about others comes to us in bits and pieces, at different stages.

I laughed nervously at this hatchet job on the willow because the tree features prominently in the novel I'm currently translating (a love story). But being a sentimental, weepy romantic myself, I personally have no problem with willows. Not sure where the story's heading, but with this extraordinary opening and the ironic tone, I'm curious to see what unfolds.

Gave up on María Gainza's OPTIC NERVE (2014) about 25 pages in this arvo (was anyone else bored by it?) & then almost didn't bother with PORTRAIT OF AN UNKNOWN LADY (2022), but now I can't put it down. No sign/evidence of second novel syndrome. Beguiled by the voice and the story. And exquisitely translated by Thomas Bunstead.

Had to do an extra shift at work today, so had time to update my Staff Picks for this month. Haven't read the Zambra (tr. by Megan McDowell) or the Statovci (tr. by David Jackson) yet, but have "picked" them to read next. (Hope no one asks me to talk them up just yet. Need to finish my current reads first: Disraeli & Marías.) But have read Yiyun Li's wonderful book & will be thoroughly recommending it.

MARRIED LIFE by #DavidVogel, a brilliant novel set in 1920s Vienna, is a disturbing & depressing story of a doomed marriage. What I love about contemporaneously written novels is the way they offer a glimpse of a particular time & place through the lens of someone who was actually there, satisfying my nostalgia for an era that I can only experience through literature. Originally written in Hebrew, Dalya Bilu's translation is impeccable.

"'It’s weird, isn't it? How people change. You start out loving them, you see them all the time and then suddenly something happens - or nothing happens - and you don't see them any more and you don't know why and then later you come across them in the street and you say hello and you keep walking.'"
Raw & confronting that "or nothing happens".

"Beauty can pierce one like a pain."
From BUDDENBROOKS (1901) by #ThomasMann, tr. by Helen T. Lowe Porter.
I have an Aschenbach-like infatuation with this photo of a handsome Thomas Mann from around the time Buddenbrooks, his first novel, was published. I did two separate #PasteUps of it back in 2010.
