I hear we're doing visibility?

This was me yesterday, for TDOV (It’s already April 1 here in Australia) sitting in front of the worlds largest trans flag. Photo taken by the wonderful @supakaity.

Today is 9 years since I came out to my then 11 year old kid, and tomorrow is 9 years since I started medically transitioning.

I was 41 years old then. Trans awareness was just on the upkick. Everyone knew Caitlyn Jenner. Laverne Cox had appeared on the cover of TIME magazine… Yet I was still the first trans person most people had met.

At the time, my understanding of gender was very binary, and my own goals pretty much consisted of “Get transition out of the way, blend back in to the world, and get on with life without much talking about the trans thing”

But, I went to my first Pride, and I was changed forever. I was surrounded by my people, which wasn’t something I’d ever felt before. And with time, I came to have a more nuanced understanding of gender, and the artificial nature of the binary. And I also came to appreciate my own queerness, and completely lost the desire to blend in and hide amongst the society that had made it so hard to accept myself in the first place.

And now, I can’t help myself. I run gender diverse events, I create spaces and help foster queer communities. I stand loud and visible and proud, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I see all of you glorious bitches, bastards and ne’er-do-wells, and I love you all!

i'd rather just be me than try to be who everyone else wanted me to be.

transitioning honestly changed my life in a good way. i finally made peace with that girl inside me, the one i kept pushing down for so long because of all the stuff i was taught growing up under patriarchy, misogyny, and rigid religious beliefs that framed femininity as shameful and inferior, something that needed to be hidden. but finding myself... it's been kind of amazing. i feel real happiness now, real support, and i actually get to live as myself and experience the girlhood i never thought i'd have.

transitioning didn't magically fix everything, but it made life feel worth it, like something i actually want to keep going for.

i'm trans. i'm here. and i wouldn't change this part of me.

Today is the Trans Day of Visibility, and from looking at my feed, it seems like y'all have some complicated feelings about it. Are you visible enough? Are you too visible? Does "passing" make you less trans, or less valid?

I can't answer these questions for you, darling. I wish I could. Here's what I can tell you:

I don't know precisely what you're going through. But as a cis woman who's spent lots of time in hyper-masculine environments, I've seen the power of simply visibly existing. So, for those of you who choose to be visible, remember the power that simply being seen has.

If you feel like you're not doing enough? Remember to put on your own mask first. Things are *scary* out there, and your survival is important. There is nothing wrong with doing the "safe" thing.

If you are proud of being trans, if you can't imagine life any other way, I am so happy that you find pride in your identity!

If being trans is just something you had to pass through on your way to being able to fit into your skin a little better, and you don't really feel like it's your identity? I am so glad that you found a path that worked for you!

Regardless of whether or not you feel like you're doing trans "right", the important thing I want you to know is that you are precisely as trans as you are. Nothing anyone says can change that for you.

Trans women are women.
Trans men are men.
Trans nonbinary people aren't confused, they know precisely who they are.
