When I read about abolitionist men the first thing I think is, how noble. Then I read about their wives and daughters who harvested, cooked, canned, wove, sewed and cleaned while their men waxed philosophical about freedom and morality and I wonder at how shallow their ideals were. #abolitionists #transcendentalists #freedom #slavery #misogyny #hypocrisy
