#OnThisDayInHistory: May 28, 1830, #AndrewJackson Signs #IndianRemovalAct
by Levi Rickert May 28, 2026
"On this day in 1830 — 196 years ago — President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law.
"The Act created a process that allowed the president to exchange lands west of the Mississippi River for the homelands of Native tribes in the eastern United States. In return, tribes were promised financial assistance, supplies for relocation, and the guarantee that they could live on their new lands under the protection of the United States government “forever.”
"In practice, however, the Indian Removal Act became a tool of #coercion and #dispossession. Under Jackson and his supporters, #NativeNations were pressured, bribed, and forced into signing #RemovalTreaties that stripped them of their ancestral territories across the Southeast.
"By the end of his presidency, Jackson had signed nearly 70 removal treaties, leading to the forced relocation of approximately 50,000 #NativeAmericans to what was then called #IndianTerritory, in present-day #Oklahoma. Entire nations were uprooted from lands they had inhabited for generations and pushed into unfamiliar territory designated by the federal government.
"The policy culminated in the Trail of Tears — one of the darkest chapters in American history. Thousands of Native people died from disease, #starvation, and exposure during the forced marches west, including nearly one-quarter of the #CherokeeNation.
"Because of his central role in Native removal and the suffering it caused, many Native Americans remember Jackson as the '#IndianKiller' president and continue to oppose efforts to honor him, including his image remaining on the twenty-dollar bill."

The #Tennessee Titans current owners are children of Bud Adams, all members and descendants of the #Cherokee Nation. The Indian Removal Act signed by Andrew Jackson expelled the Cherokee from their homes and force-marched them to reservations in #Oklahoma along the #TrailOfTears.
Many died along the Trail of Tears which went through Nashville, Tennessee. Andrew Jackson’s estate ‘The Hermitage’ is also in #Nashville.

Morning cup of coffee getting too expensive? Try Yaupon 🍵
Naturally sweet, no tannin, clear.
Tariffs on coffee and tea could give a boost to North America's only native caffeinated plant. NPR's Ayesha Rascoe talks with Abianne Falla, owner of CatSpring Yaupon.

What good are #TreatyRights if the fish are poisoned?
Monday, July 14, 2025
By George Ochenski, Daily Montanan"By virtually any measure, the #ConfederatedSalishKootenai Tribal Nation is an incredible success story against all odds. Forcibly removed from their homeland in the Bitterroot Valley, despite not having waged war against the white settlers or army, their own '#TrailOfTears' brought them to the Flathead Valley to live within the boundaries of the vastly reduced lands they retained in the #HellgateTreatyOf1855.
"Although the #HellgateTreaty is widely regarded as one of the best treaties signed by any of the nation’s #IndigenousPeople, even land supposedly reserved for the exclusive habitation of the #SalishKootenai was opened to purchase by non-tribal #settlers by the #DawesAct of 1887.
"The act’s intentions were to allocate reservation lands the tribes already owned to individual families as private property and, as part of the 'civilization' of #NativeAmericans, it required tribal members to register with the federal government to receive their 'allotment.'
"The entire debacle was part of the #AllotmentAndAssimilationEra from 1887 to 1934. Simply put, the federal government’s plan was to force Native Americans to be 'assimilated' into #EuropeanAmerican culture.
"Importantly, any reservation lands not allocated to tribal members was deemed
'surplus' land and opened to purchase by non-tribal settlers. This excursion into #ReservationLands was further exacerbated by the ability of tribal members to sell their allotment parcels to non-tribal members."The fracturing of the Salish-Kootenai’s tribal lands through sales to non-tribal members continues to cause serious problems today, including the long and on-going battle to retain their #water, #hunting and #fishing #TreatyRights.
"Article III of the Hellgate Treaty could not be more clear regarding the Tribe’s fishing rights: 'The exclusive right of taking fish in all the streams running through or bordering said reservation is further secured to said Indians; as also the right of taking fish at all usual and accustomed places…'
"Yet, just last month the Confederated Salish-Kootenai Tribal Nation issued a very serious warning to tribal members regarding the fish they have treaty rights to catch because they are poisoned.
CSKT Fish Consumption Advisory
"The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes issued a fish consumption advisory on June 24, 2025, warning tribal citizens not to eat fish due to the presence of Polychlorinated biphenyls (#PCBs), #dioxins and #furans at levels deemed unsafe for humans: Source: Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes
"The #FishConsumptionAdvisory urges 'all tribal members to avoid consuming all species and sizes of fish harvested from the lower Clark Fork River from the Bitterroot River near Missoula to the Flathead River near Paradise. Recent testing has confirmed the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins and furans in fish at levels that are unsafe for consumption by Tribal peoples. It is also advisable to avoid consuming rainbow trout and northern pike harvested from the Bitterroot River and the upper Clark Fork River above the Bitterroot River to Rock Creek, and, to avoid consuming rainbow trout from the Blackfoot River.
"As the Advisory explains: 'These contaminants pose a health risk to all fish consumers, and an even greater health risk to the most sensitive members of the Tribal population including women of child bearing age, pregnant nursing women, and young children. These contaminants have been linked to negative health effects in the immune, and nervous systems and may be associated with birth defects…PCBs and dioxins are classified as probable and definite #HumanCarcinogens, respectively.'
"So what good are treaty fishing rights if you can’t eat the fish because they’re poisoned? Are they really 'rights' — or is this just another in our nation’s long and shameful history of abrogating its treaties with Native Americans?
"Moreover, #Montana’s poison fish affect us all. Just as our government has failed the Salish-Kootenai, they have likewise failed to uphold our rights to the 'swimmable/fishable waters' guaranteed by the #CleanWaterAct — because no one, tribal or non-tribal, is immune to poisoned fish."

The Newark Earthworks in Ohio are monuments to the human genius of ancient people who built them. These awe-inspiring structures have earned World Heritage status as one of the world’s most magnificent wonders. We can only guess the purposes and meanings they had for their builders and for others who have marveled at them over the centuries.

March 26, 1839 - The Cherokee Nation came to the end of the “Trail of Tears,” a forced march from their ancestral home in the Smoky Mountains to the Oklahoma Territory. General Winfield Scott, under orders from President Andrew Jackson, arrested then drove the tribe’s members through the winter, leaving 4000 dead along the route. According to John Burnett, an interpreter with the U.S. Army, “. . . covetousness on the part of the white race was the cause of all that the Cherokees had to suffer . . . .” The train of 645 wagons stretched for five km (three miles), leaving behind as many as twenty graves in one day, principally victims of exposure.

The Newark Earthworks
This month in Newark, Ohio, the Octagon is finally open to the public. It is among the most impressive of North America’s many ancient earthworks, but it has been occupied for more than a century by a private country club golf course. ‘Tis the Season to Talk #ClimateCollapse, #NuclearColonialism, and Freeing #LeonardPeltier
by Desiree Hellegers, December 11, 2024
"I don’t know about you, but personally, the whole festive holiday thing seems to be falling a bit flat this year. Don’t get me wrong, like every other year, I do plan to really go to town on a pumpkin pie or two. But this year, the annual deluge of Black Friday ads egging us on to higher levels of consumption–with corresponding carbon emissions and solid and liquid waste–seemed particularly hollow, morbid–predatory, even–falling as Black Friday did this year on November 29, the date the U.N. first recognized in 1977 as International Day of #Solidarity with the #PalestinianPeople. This year all the excess, forced pageantry, and planned obsolescence of Black Friday seems in such stark and ironic contrast to the poverty in #Gaza.
From #Plymouth to Palestine
"Winter is coming soon to Gaza where hundreds of thousands of shell-shocked people are struggling against the odds to care for themselves and their families–from infants to elders and recent amputees on crutches and in wheelchairs, as well as people with other disabilities– eking out lives in the streets, tents, and precarious ruins of shelled out apartments. In The Guardian, Kaamil Ahmed and Ana Lucía González Paz describe Gaza as a 'sonic hellscape' filled variously with the 'incessant buzzing of drones' and 'more violent intrusions: Israeli missile strikes, sirens, gunfire and the screams of frightened people.' And the situation is unlikely to get better under Herr Trump.
"The man who as president moved the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem stands to personally profit from, as reported in The Guardian, investment his son-in-law Jared Kushner has in the removal of Palestinians from Gaza and its development as an Israeli waterfront resort. And no doubt Trump is also well aware of the profits to be had from exploiting Gaza’s offshore marine gas fields. But, if Jewish-led protests at the Thanksgiving Parade in New York City, and more recently in the Canadian Parliament, are anything to go by, solidarity actions against the unfolding genocide to Gaza are likely to continue to build in the run up to Hanukkah and the January inauguration.
"But in the lead up to Christmas, Joe Biden seems as willing as ever to continue the seemingly limitless supply of U.S. weapons to help annihilate Gaza. I’m just speculating here, (so, please, sir, do not to put me to the dunking stool!) but Jesus himself might be the first to observe that giving birth in a manger sounds pretty idyllic right now to women in Gaza weakened by hunger, giving birth in the rubble of buildings that used to be apartments, universities and hospitals. No sterile sheets, no antiseptic, nothing to dull the pain, nothing to stop the next forced removal, the next relocation. The #PalestinianTrailOfTears."

Happy #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth From the Army That Brought You the #TrailOfTears
After 170 years of armed attacks, #ForcedRelocations, #EthnicCleansing, and #genocide of #NativeAmericans, the #USMilitary wants to celebrate.
by Nick Turse
November 28 2024,"'The Army was, bottom line, an instrument of a settler colonial empire that was determined to convert Native lands into private property for mostly white settlers,' said Jeffrey Ostler, professor of history emeritus at the University of Oregon and author of 'Surviving Genocide: Native Nations and the United States From the American Revolution to Bleeding Kansas.' 'That was its mission: to carry out a federal government policy that, in practice, often became a genocidal war.'"

My personal bike blog crashed hard a while back. Restored posts up through Dec. 1, 2023, and now I'll be using the Internet Archives Wayback Machine to recreate lost posts from that point forward.
In the meantime, here's a post I wrote in Nov. 2022 on biking programs and events related to Native America. Have anything to add for an update? https://bikestylelife.com/2022/11/27/we-are-still-here-indigenous-focused-bicycle-programs/
