  1. Ever heard of Directional Requirements for biking on sidewalks? We were chatting about that topic with a local attorney, which led to today’s post. Californians, note Spriesterbach v. Holland cited in this post: bikemonterey.org/directional-r

As for stop-as-yield, we continue to support it. We look forward to it moving back up CA bike advocates' legislative priorities list—and finally getting the necessary support to become California law.

  4. In our latest conversation, this eve, with a teen cited in Monterey County while biking, we found what is typically the case: The teen received helmet citation (helmets are required for minors by California law) while biking in a manner that drew the attention of police officer—doing wheelies amidst traffic. Shout-out to Salinas Police Department, as the teen said the SPD cop was very nice; and shout-out to Monterey County Superior Court for offering that the teen could connect with Bicycling Monterey and get their $193 fine waived. bikemonterey.org/youth-bike-an

  5. On my way to visit my father in the hospital today I came across the dumbest human I’ve ever had contact with.

She was driving the wrong way on the highway. To borrow an old South Park catchphrase, she was literally COMING RIGHT FOR US! She slammed on her breaks and did a three point turn in the middle of the VFW highway in Lowell.

Ready for the irony? I passed her, swearing at her vehemently, as she well deserved, and a couple miles later she pulled into the hospital parking garage with me. Let’s hope she checked herself in for whatever problem resulted in her driving on the wrong side of a divided highway.

    Un-freakin’-believable.

  6. For a change it is good to see that the 9 new traffic law changes for 2024 in California are all reasonable and make incremental progress in the right direction of aiding bicyclists, pedestrians and automatically ticketing rule-breaking car drivers. 👏👏

  7. One of the things that gets me is how traffic enforcement on non-highways is basically zero. The only thing left is mostly bigoted targeted enforcement. And as a result drivers have invented new privileges for themselves.
    - Right on red doesn't including stopping or even yielding.
    - Speeding is normal and all attempts to reduce it are money grabs.
    - Crosswalks exist only so you can blame the corpse that isn't in a crosswalk for their own death. They aren't for stopping, yielding or slowing down.

Cops are the worst drivers too, mostly because they face 0 consequences and many get their licenses cleared when they graduate from the academy.

I am a fan of camera enforcement even though it increases our surveillance society but we also need regular old enforcement. The police have been nullifying traffic laws since the mid-90s, basically everywhere. It has made us all less safe.
