Fleer Ultra X-Men Series 1 Original Team cards!
Which one is your favorite?

123 - Excalibur Part 3
I appreciate that Feron's cloud head is on Rachel's card. Poor Micromax doesn't make the cloud head cut (he does at least get name checked on the card back).

122 - Excalibur Part 2
I messed up yesterday & jumped from X-Men Blue to Excalibur, but I'll finish out the triptych then go back.
It's too bad Widget couldn't make it onto Kitty's card since, you know, it's her.

Speaking of Steranko, here's the X-Men Blue full triptych!
This was a little tricky to line up; there's more carry over elements across the image. Some cropping (and the border I added) are doing some heavy lifting.
-
115 - Excalibur Part 1
Thanks to the fact that Excalibur at the time was only three members, this triptych basically serves as second cards for those members - w/past team members in the background as heads-in-clouds.

114 - X-Men: Blue Team Part 3
Not sure why Rogue's butt dimple is so front & center, but here we are.
I like the cardback calling out the Blue Team as the sneakier hand-to-hand team, which is def how I thought of them.
-
112 - X-Men: Blue Team Part 2
For whatever reason, it feels like we didn't get Beast and Gambit paired up much during the Blue/Gold Era.
Love the little twirling motion of the card in Gambit's hand.
-
112 - X-Men: Blue Team Part 1
Continuing this set's efforts to convince us Sabretooth was ever an active member (this card hits differently given how his "X-Men prisoner" arc ends.
But not gonna argue w/more Steranko!

The X-Men Gold triptych all in one!
Still not great!

111 - X-Men: Gold Team (C)
Once again, the "extreme facial closeups" approach is doing the card no favors.

In honor of last week's X-Men '97, what's your favorite Gambit card?

110 - X-Men: Gold Team (B)
With Colossus off with the Acolytes, Professor X gets tossed into the Gold Team to round out their six man roster.#TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #TristanSchane #Teams #XMenGold
-
109 - X-Men: Gold Team (A)
New category: Teams!
In lieu of the traditional "one card per team" approach, this set dedicates a triptych for each team, with a few of each team on each 1/3 of the image.

108 - Fatal Attractions
Rarely do I complain about MORE Cyclops, but on the list of character's relevant to "Fatal Attractions" whose heads should occupy the third spot on the card, Cyclops would be WAY down that list.
-
107 - X-Cutioner's Song
It could use more baby food, but otherwise, this captures the vibe of the story pretty well.
-
106 - X-Tinction Agenda
The Wolverine/Jean kiss in this story was never a big deal for me, so I've always wished Larkin had captured a different moment for the card.
Hodge, though, is perfection.
-
105 - Inferno
I like the almost Tarot-esque presentation of this card, though I don't love how Mister Sinister has always looked like a vampire with an overbite to me.
-
104 - Fall of the Mutants
Probably out of necessity, Phillips focuses on just one of the three stories & while it makes sense to go with the X-Men-specific storyline, it does mean we were robbed of getting Bird-Brain on a card.
-
103 - Mutant Massacre
New category: X-Overs!
Not sure I love the "toxic slime" coloring & font on the cardback but I do love Artie making it onto a trading card.

Fleer Ultra X-Men Series 1 Mutant Liberation Front!
Which card is your favorite?

102 - Professor X
Two things I love about this card:
1. Chuck smoking a pipe.
2. This totally looks like a portrait that would be hanging over the fireplace in the X-Mansion parlor. -
101 - Marvel Girl
Jokes on them, in the Silver Age, Jean could barely lift a log without collapsing, because "woman."🤦
I do appreciate the cardback only mentions her telekinetic powers, as was her only power initially.
-
100 - Beast
One of my favorite cards in the set. Love seeing JRsr on a Silver Age character, love how ape-like Beast is, love the shag carpeting that is probably meant to be grass.
10/10, no notes.
-
097 - Iceman
Great texture to the ice, falling somewhere between early Snowman Iceman and later Iceman Iceman. Plus a Champions shoutout! In 1994!
-
097 - Cyclops
Time now for one of my favorite subsets: Original Team.
Something about the pencil thin optic blast feels very Silver Age.
-
096 - Reignfire
Very Hildebrandt-ian front image w/the blue background & another cardback just kind of flinging darts at another mystery character (I don't recall his energy bolts every being called out as a "rain-like barrage")

Which Fleer Ultra X-Men Series 1 Upstart card is your favorite?

095 - Moonstar
It's still hilarious there was a time when we were asked to question whether a character named Moonstar was an existing character named Moonstar, esp. when both Moonstars shared a similar power set & iconography.
-
094 - Locus
This is one of those characters I wish we'd gotten more of. She more or less just disappears after Reignfire's short-lived MLF implodes, barring that one later John Francis Moore X-Force story.
-
093 - Forearm
I really dig this card. Something about the old school "put up your dukes!" boxing pose. Plus the cardback basically being like, "Power: has four arms."
