  1. 136 - Thunderbird

Can't do a collection of inactive X-Men without arguably the most famous one of all.

Somewhere along the way, I misplaced this card, so these images are from @tradingcarddb.

  2. Which Fleer Ultra X-Men Series 1 New Mutants card is the best?

Art from Bill Sienkiewicz, Bo Hampton & Joe Phillips.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM #NewMutants

  3. 135 - Mastermind

One of the better trading card/static image depictions of Mastermind's powers.

The power description is reaching a bit; he technically doesn't go into people's minds - he needed help to do that w/Phoenix

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #InMemoriam #JamesSullivan

  4. 134 - Dark Phoenix

Can't do a "dead X-Men" subset without Dark Phoenix!

The description of her powers on the cardback seems to have forgotten Phoenix was also telepathic.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #InMemoriam #RayLago

  5. 134 - Dark Phoenix

Can't do a "dead X-Men" subset without Dark Phoenix!

The description of her powers on the cardback seems to have forgotten Phoenix was also telepathic.

  7. 128 - Warlock

What a great card. To have Sienkiewicz working on this set and NOT have him do the Warlock card would have been a crime.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #InMemoriam #BillSienkiewicz

  8. 127 - Magik

New category: Deceased (I'm tagging it as #InMemoriam). It's mostly New Mutants & villains.

I appreciate the cardback text saying "reverted" and not the redundant "reverted back", one of my biggest grammatical pet peeves.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips

  9. Full X-Factor team triptych!

This was tricky to put together - there's really no good way to line up Polaris & Havok's legs AND the bottom border between cards 2 and 3.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #XFactor #Teams

  10. 120 - X-Factor Part 3

A very Wolfsbane-first card. I appreciate there are multiples of Madrox.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #Teams #XFactor

  11. 119 - X-Factor Part 2

I'm not sure I ever thought of the "Muir Island Saga" as a reverse Giant-Size X-Men #1 before, but that notion isn't entirely incorrect...

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #Teams #XFactor

  12. 118 - X-Factor Part 1

It's less obvious when all three cards are together, but on its own, the perspective here makes Random look like he's just a tiny lil' guy.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #Teams #XFactor

  13. 123 - Excalibur Part 3

I appreciate that Feron's cloud head is on Rachel's card. Poor Micromax doesn't make the cloud head cut (he does at least get name checked on the card back).

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #Teams #Excalibur

  14. 122 - Excalibur Part 2

I messed up yesterday & jumped from X-Men Blue to Excalibur, but I'll finish out the triptych then go back.

It's too bad Widget couldn't make it onto Kitty's card since, you know, it's her.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #Teams #Excalibur

  15. 115 - Excalibur Part 1

Thanks to the fact that Excalibur at the time was only three members, this triptych basically serves as second cards for those members - w/past team members in the background as heads-in-clouds.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #Teams #Excalibur

  16. 104 - Fall of the Mutants

Probably out of necessity, Phillips focuses on just one of the three stories & while it makes sense to go with the X-Men-specific storyline, it does mean we were robbed of getting Bird-Brain on a card.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #XOvers

  17. 103 - Mutant Massacre

    New category: X-Overs!

Not sure I love the "toxic slime" coloring & font on the cardback but I do love Artie making it onto a trading card.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips #XOvers

  18. 102 - Professor X

Two things I love about this card:

    1. Chuck smoking a pipe.
    2. This totally looks like a portrait that would be hanging over the fireplace in the X-Mansion parlor.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #ScottHampton #OriginalTeam

  19. 101 - Marvel Girl

Jokes on them, in the Silver Age, Jean could barely lift a log without collapsing, because "woman."🤦

I do appreciate the cardback only mentions her telekinetic powers, as was her only power initially.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #ScottHampton #OriginalTeam

  20. 097 - Cyclops

Time now for one of my favorite subsets: Original Team.

Something about the pencil thin optic blast feels very Silver Age.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #ScottHampton #OriginalTeam

  21. 086 - Siena Blaze

Continuing the run of Upstarts - which might be the most 1994 thing about this set. Though Siena Blaze is a legit inclusion at this time, and this is a good card (even if it makes her power look like "makes snow").

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #ScottHampton

  22. 081 - Brood

A relatively action-oriented image relative to most of Sienkiewicz's other contributions to this set. I like that he chose to highlight their flying ability, which tends to get overlooked (and makes them even creepier).

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #BillSienkiewicz

  23. 074 - Mojo

I don't know if an extreme closeup on Mojo's face is the best way to capture his character, but at least it's an exceedingly well-done extreme closeup from Sienkiewicz, who may well be this set's stealth MVP.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #BillSienkiewicz

  24. 063 - Sauron

Another Sienkiewicz stunner; really captures how freaky it would be to encounter a pterodactyl man.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #BillSienkiewicz #BrotherhoodOfEvilMutants

  25. 054 - Colossus

Unlike Feral, Colossus - who threw in w/the Acolytes since the last set of cards - rightly gets listed as a Super-Villain.

I like too that he leads off that section. Not sure why he's fighting Doc Ock though.

    #TradingCardADay #XMen #FUXM1 #JoePhillips

  26. 046 - Sunfire

    Sunfire!

Making his trading card debut in an X-Men-specific set (following his first trading card in Marvel Universe Series 3).

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #JoePhillips

  27. 044 - Mirage

The mystery of whether the MLF's Moonstar was actually Dani...Moonstar...never seemed that mysterious, but this card seems to exist just to tease it.

But it does give us Sienkiewicz on another former New Mutant!

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #BillSienkiewicz

  28. 033 - Wolfsbane

Back-to-back Sienkiewicz! Not a character he co-created, but another old New Mutant friend.

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #XFactor #BillSienkiewicz

  29. 032 - Strong Guy

Check out those tiny little legs! Really underscores how distorted his upper body strength is.

Always fun to see a character's co-creator do their trading card.

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #XFactor #BillSienkiewicz

  30. 030 - Polaris

This card is 1000 times sexier than any image of Polaris in the "sexy" gold costume she adopted around this time.

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #XFactor #BillSienkiewicz

  31. 026 - Siryn

There's a way you can read this card as "she's just failing" and while I might like a little bit of a scream effect, I think you can also read it as a more dynamic "dropping in for an attack" picture.

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #XForce #ScottHampton

  32. 021 - Cable

Fantastic card. Love seeing Sienkiewicz doing one of the "later" New Mutants.

This set briefly tries to make Six Pack happen, so Cable gets two Group Affiliations (Domino was flagged as Six Pack too).

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #XForce #SixPack #BillSienkiewicz

  33. 017 - Nightcrawler

Perfect match of subject, approach & artist. Depicting Nightcrawler coming out of a teleport is clever & Sienkiewicz's abstract style creates the impression of a figure materializing from nowhere.

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #Excalibur #BillSienkiewicz

  34. 007 - Psylocke

Bill Sienkiewicz with his first card of the set. Sadly, it's not the greatest Psylocke card.

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #XMenBlue #BillSienkiewicz

  35. 002 - Rogue

In lieu of the classic bar graph stats, this set adopts a "Mutant Power Profile" featuring a partial wireframe (SO hot at the time) recreation of the cardfront image w/notes detailing the powers.

    #TradingCardADay #FUXM1 #XMen #XMenBlue #JoePhillips

  36. 024 - Empyrean

A character with a complicated power set tied directly to a specific storyline, Empyrean never really took off.

Props for teaching me a new vocab word via the name back in the day.
